rear door/hatch trouble 96 4runner

Hi all,

New trouble with the hatch :(

I cannot open it with the handle from the outside.
Window works, I think, I am afraid to move it more than an inch.
My rear wiper is gone.

I took the panel off and I can see the inside.
The cable is not broken. I can open the lock by pulling on the cable.
When I pull on the door handle it moves horizontal actuator arm (blue) that goes to some sort of rotating mechanism that I suppose pulls on the cable.

If it will help I can post a pic, but so far I don't understand where the breakdown is...

Mine acts funny sometimes. I have to squeeze the handle then push the door with the palm of my hand thats squeezing the handle and it unlatches. I've got stuff that pushes the door from the inside and I believe that's my issue.
 
I havent dealt with this on our rigs but on a lot of doors the cable is inside a insulation that is mounted to points of the door. if the mounting point breaks which is usually a piece of plastic the cable will be loose and add extra slack to the cable. So when you pull the lever the cable will move but not enough. You can try and hold the cable tight if this is the case and then pull the lever and see if it works. If it does you just need to replace the broken mount. Try posting some pics. I dont get on here much lately but maybe someone can figure it out. Hope this helps

If you post a picture I can tell ya what's up. I've taken that thing apart 20 times.
 
Here how it looks like. The photo was taken from under the open hatch, so you look at it sort of upside down.

Rotating thingy. Never mind the white string - I attached it so I can open the lock from inside.

Pulled on the door handle and blue arm is pushed to the left, but nothing happens to the cable.

Pushed with my finger on the point where steel cable is attached.
This actually unlocks the door.

Think of it this way. Something has bent or is worn from lots of use. Ive noticed a lot of 3rd gens you have to push on the door as you push the handle. I bet something is bent causing it not to open.

So I went to take the pic of the handle. I'd have to take most of the door apart to do that, unless I don't get what you mean...

Anyways, I decided to play a bit with the rotating thingy.
I pulled off black plastic that covers it (most of it actually broke off :biggrin2:)
There's a little white thingy that slides on metal 'rail' - when it's in the left position it actuates the rotating thingy so it actually pulls on the steel cable that opens the lock! and when it's in the right position there's no pull on the cable. I think it is switched by the central lock, I need to ask someone to lock /unlock the doors while I am looking at it to be sure, I was alone this morning.

So bottom line - it may be electrical thing..? as things gradually fail in the hatch (wiper, stop light).
It could be a mechanical thing... After I played with the white thingy a couple times - the hatch locks and unlocks OK.

Any suggestions what to do about it?

if you unlock the rear hatch manually with the key does it open normally? sounds like its not unlocking electrically. probably a bad solenoid if thats what is used in there. sit in the back and have someone lock and unlock it electrically while you watch and see if anythings working. and then have someone unlock and lock it with the key.
 
You might need a new rear lock actuator. Also what is the black oil looking substance in the first picture?
 
the lock cylinder has seized completely, cannot unlock with a key

Is it what it's called? how much is it?
black stuff is graphite lube I used years ago to lube the lock cylinder...

Inside Panel

How do I get the inside panel off when I can't open the tailgate? Tool? Coat hanger?

Got it!! Bent 3" nail and start at the BOTTOM not the SIDE!!
