Rear End Noise (UPDATED videos)

For a while now I have been hearing some rear end noise whenever I go over bumps/cracks. I sounds like struts to me... but in spring im replacing the entire suspension with icons purchased on black friday.

Curious if anyone thinks it might be different so then I could grab those parts too and hammer it out all at once.

In the video you can hear the noise of what seems to be my rear end sounding like it is going to fall apart. I also get some feedback in the floorboards (like something might be hitting or colliding).

I have read that muffler mounts can come undone and as of last week checked with everything looking peachy.

Modifications:
-Billstein 5100
-Toytec 2.0 rear springs

Mudflaps are off too but dont think a loose bumper could produce something in my feet to feel. My next guess to check was to tighten the spare tire.

Front end noise

Curious if you're familiar with a noise I've experienced lately... I recently bought a 2-year old 2016 Trail. Sometimes, when I make a hard left (or right), up a relatively short driveway (4 feet long), with very moderate pitch, it sounds like almost metal on metal. Is it common for a two year old 4Runner to have this problem?

no idea. maybe a wheel bearing but that would be when you turn 1 direction (for each side) and would sound like the noise you have when your brakes are about done.

Not sure about both directions...

videos are where its at if you can get people to watch them.
 
I was going to suggest the spare, but you already mentioned it. There isn't much that would cause a thud like that on a stock vehicle other than the spare that wouldn't also cause a noticeable effect with the way the truck feels (loose or missing linkage bolts). Try the spare and go from there.

Ya, I agree. That really sounds like a spare tire. I think if it was a strut issue you would have a much more noticeable sound.

The other thing to check that has happened to me before is the jack can come loose but that only usually heard at bumps.
 
Just for completeness wrap electric tape on the trunk latch point. I did this and all my squeaking and bumping noises from the rear area went away. I found this mod in another thread and it's been life changing to say the least.
 
I've had to chase various squeaks and rattles in my two 4Runners. Drives you nuts sometimes. A few things to check - the spare tire chain, the bottle jack and tool area, the rear striker hatch, and the metal bracket holding the striker hatch switch which is located behind the plastic trim on the hatch door.

As previously mentioned I had a rattle on the striker hatch which is fixed by wrapping the latch point with electrical tape. I had been chasing that rattle for more than a year and took it to Toyota a few times. Occasionally I'll re-tape the latch and spray some WD-40 into the striker hatch.

I then had some weird creaking noise when taking turns. Drove me nuts for 6+ months. Popped open the plastic cover on the rear hatch. Cleaned some things up, sprayed some dust out, and re-tightened the bolts on the speaker and the hatch switch bracket. Noise went away finally.
 
Spare tire is super tight.

Took a rubber mallet to it and no movement or noise.

I did wrap the latch last week due to that annoying creaking sound. That fixed that issue!

Took my jack and tools out - still got it

Put my mud flaps back on helped but still sounds like the rear end is all loose.

Jumped on the back bumper bouncing it pretty good - no noise.
Jumped on one side rocking it back and forth no noise.

Reverse to slamming on brakes no noises
Forward slamming on brakes no noises

It’s always on rough pavement.


I am going to check my gobi rack make sure that didn’t loosen up but this is in the back...

I am going to strap a go pro under the car try to get a video if it’s light out when I get home tomorrow

I was hit from behind 2 years ago. New tailgate and bumper... but this noise was before just got progressively worse!

Any other ideas?

Rear fender to hub is 25” so 3” lift... Billy’s are only good up to 2 inches... but when I bounce on it to see if I’m topping them out no noises
 
Trailing arm torque? PanHard? Upper and lower shock mount bolts?

I have a noisy trailing arm bushing and it was tough to find.
 
another brief update this morning - i tried to hit man hole covers on specific sides.:yo:

passenger side seemed to not make the noise vs as much as the drivers side.

5 total:
2 pass. = no noise
3 drivers = 2 with noise / 1 without any noise

By noise i mean what is heard in the video.

When it did make the sound - i def felt like it was more behind me on the driver side of the car - driver rear wheel well. Difficult when driving to work at 5:45am and your half awake:lol:

I will try to have a coworker take my car for lunch and ill sit in the back to try and inspect more.

Will check the panhard bar, strut tightness tonight/tomorrow morning.

Anything else throw it my way!

The hood latch can really telegraph around the vehicle too. It’s worth double checking and engaging he rubber bumpers a bit more.

If you were rear ended, I’d take a good look at your upper and lower trailing arm bushings while you check the torque.

I’ve got a rear suspension cheat sheet for torque values that I can find if you need.

Thanks for the help! Def think its driver side. Went and got lunch (just me) and drove around in parking lot over speed bumps for alittle bit. I will take some pictures of the bushings see what you guys think!
 
I had a similar sound on a BMW. At rest everything seemed tight and solid and I couldn't seem to repeat it.

It turned out to be the sway bar connector links. It could be easy to test, disconnect the sway bar, take it for a drive and see if the sound continues.

Something i did notice - i had a buddy rock the car side to side. Placing my hand on the rear shock SHAFT (where the boot covers up) (both sides) they almost pop or bind. They arent smooth when expanding.

Thinking maybe the struts are an issue with play?
 
OP - I've been experiencing a very similar issue every winter when cold becomes sustained. This weekend it has returned with a vengeance. I've taken it in, replaced 5100s in the back, and can't find the solution.
