Rear End Trouble

Hey Guys,

Im new to the T4R scene. I picked up an '89 4cyl 5spd two years and put it away to one day fix the rear end (third member needs to be replaced).

So here I am in this forum looking for a place (or places) where I can pick up a used rear diff or maybe pick one up from a newer model.


Any help would be great.

Gear ratio

the third member that you seek. What gear ratio do you require? you can look up the axle code on your VIN plate on the door.

Pretty much all the older 3rd members are the same, as long as they are from a 4wd. The v6 3rds are slightly different in bearings. Correct me if I'm wrong but any 3rd member from 79-95 will work.
On another note, why don't you just rebuild yours? It's really not all that hard. You are somewhat risking it buying it used because of possible contamination and/or other issues.

I'm looking for a 4.10 gear. I thought about rebuilding but I was told the quicker (and cheaper way) was to just get a used one. A friend who works at Toyota told me the 1st gen were notorious for having diff issues.

This is what I did with my front. Just grab one off craigslist or a junk yard. Plenty of places sell complete 3rds, but it gets pricey.

Your friend who works at Toyota must not have been working for Toyota very long, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

To fix the one you've got, you'll want new ring and pinion ($150, plus or minus) and a master install kit (another $150, plus or minus), and then you can expect to pay a couple hours labor at least for a trained tech for install them. If you watch your local craigslist and classifieds you'll likely see used 4.10 thirds coming up for between $100 to $150, but you'll be putting an unknown in the truck and that's always risky. You'll find them in junkyards starting at $200, but again, they're unknown.

If you're planning on driving it for a while I'd fix the one you've got, hit a couple driveline shops and get some quotes. If you're flipping the truck or only plan on driving it occasionally, nothing wrong with putting a used third in.

Try posting in the Wanted sections too.
Used 4.10 3rds are common as heck and go for like $50.
Toyota 3rds are not known for problems.

Thanks for the help guys. Yeah, it seems my 'friend' was talking out of his a** and knows nothing about 4Runners. I'll keep you guys posted.
