Rear gate problems still unsolved

My rear gate opens only when you turn key on and move the rear window down/up - then the rear gate will open. It seems to reset each time you turn the key off. I don't think the key does anything inserted to rear gate. I have normalized the rear window several times.
* Seems as though you get to open the gate one time after doing the inside window down/up thing. Once you lock the doors - the thing resets and you have to get back in and do the window down/up. I have checked the inside window track for things that may keep the window from going up all of the way.

It is a new purchase for me - 05 Limited

Do the other electronics in the back work ie wipers, defroster etc?

I'd pull the back panel off so you can at least take a look for any obvious physical damage. Here's how if you don't know.

Then I would unplug and plug in every connector looking for corrosion. Finally, I would reset the rear hatch ECU by pulling the plug on the lower right side, counting to 10 and then plugging it back in. You will have to normalize the window again.

Try that and report back.

Ignore the extra wires/relays in the photo. They are for the keyfob window up hack.

Rear gate

Yes - the defroster and wiper work when you turn ignition key and move the rear window down/up one time. Rear gate, defrost, & wiper will not work until the window has come down/up one time- this must be done each time after you take key out of ignition. When you unlock the 4Runner - the back area will be dormit - cannot open the gate & rear gate key does nothing. Get into truck and turn it on- move the rear window down/up one time, then it all works.. only to crap out again when you take the key out of ignition..

Asmara has some good advice. You need to isolate the issue start with wires, connections and move to the switches and sensors, see if everything else works? if the rear wiper and washer pump do not then it could be that rear sensor shut off that shuts things down when the window is not up, you may have a short to corrosion in that. Has it been really cold did something get wet? that may have started the issue but sounds like a short in the back of sorts to me.
