Rear glass installation?

So I broke out my rear glass and smashed in the lift gate out wheeling today

Which leads me to ask if anyone knows how difficult it is to replace the glass in the lift gate? I figure I will just knock out the dent/crease and try to get some new glass so that I avoid the scary cost of a new lift gate.

Yikes. Get ahold of Jmildoc, he may have some spare glass from his old hatch. From what's remembered wheni opened mine up, it's sitting in the track, should be able to set it in there. Look on CL for a whole replacement, that's what he did. Got it from Cincy, delivered, for like $200.

Shouldn't be too hard. Remove the 1 screw holding the strap on the trim panel, then use a putty knife around the edge of the panel to pop it off. You should see the glass attachment to the window track, and it should be pretty easy from there.

Had that happen to my T4R several years back, you need to check to make sure the window reg isn't broken (it has two plastic rollers that the glass sit on) if it is broken then you'll need a new one (their not repairable) I called a glass company to come replace the rear glass, thats when I found out the reg was broken, the guy jury rigged it so the the gass was put in but could/did not roll down, if it was it would fall off the track....I eventually ended replacing the complete rear lift gate due to the repair of the old one was too much. (body dent/window regulator/painting/rear wiper) I lucked out the rear lift gate I found (used) was the same white color and it was a direct install (it took two people) So I suggest you buying a used complete lift gate and swapping it out.....just my two cents from experience...good luck

I just checked on replacing my rear glass, due to some scratches in the glass. Local glass company wanted $500 for the glass and install.

So good luck finding a good one cheap on CL...Or better yet...listen to Millerad1651 and ask around here...hopefully someone can take care of you!

Its actually fairly easy... You may want a friend to help when you bolt the new one in though.

1. Remove the interior panel. There should be a 10mm bolt under the pull handle. The rest of the panel should be held on with plastic push clips. Take a flat screwdriver and pry the pannel away from the the hatch while its in the up position. You'll hear and feel the "pop" as the clips pop out. Once you get it started you can use just your hands to pull on the panel and release them. You want to start at either bottom corner first. There isn't anything complicated about the clips, they just pull directly away from the hatch and remain attached to the plastic panel.
2. Roll the window up or down to about the middle of the hatch. Youll see the two tracks that the glass attaches to. Whats left is 4 plastic tabs connected to the tracks with 4 10mm bolts. Remove them but keep the bolts to use on the new glass (also remove the defroster tabs on each side from the wires).
3. Vacuum out the broken glass.. Best done with a shop-vac and compressed air to blow all the little pieces out(its a pain, just get all you can)
4. Close the door. Remove the rubber that the glass rolls up into. It jst pulls out by hand.(leave the bottom on. Only the top/sides need to go) clean any glass out of the rubber and set aside.(this makes room for the glass to go back in).
5. Be sure the dent dosent press too far in, as it would hit the glass. Its only really a concern where the bottom peice(the rubber that still there) will sit on the glass. Bend it out accordingly.
6. With the hatch closed, slide the glass down into the hole(from outside) and stay to the outside of the pinchweld(where the upper rubber slips on, you'll see when you get there). Lightly let the glass rest in the bottom of the door.
7. This is the "have a friend" part. Open the door slowly so you dont band the loose new glass around much. Now pull the glass up to where it attaches to the regulator (the glass will have the 4 plastic tabs on it). You can move the regulator up or down to find the correct place to easily reach and reattach the tabs with the 4 10mm bolts(normally near tge middle of the panel). You'll find out fast that your friend is going to make it allot easier. He can align one side while you do the other... When its bolted in, reattach the defroster wires. They just slip on the new metal tab on each side of tge glass near the bottom.
8. Close door lightly. Roll the window down and put tge rubber back in around the glass. Making sure its firmly pressed back into place by hand.
Now roll the window up a few inches at a time and the glass will self center in the rubber. If you hear scratching, you didnt get all the glass out of the rubber. Roll window back down and check by running the screwdriver in the rubber..
After the window is all the way up. Roll it up and down several time (you may hear light crunching.. Thats small glass fragments that got in the regulator lube and should grind themselfs to nothing in 10-20 cycles.
9. Press the door panel back on, put the hadel bolt back in and your done.

The regulator should be fine.. Its attached to the inner side of the door and your dent dosent look to be enough to have done anything to it.. Then getting to the glass tabs, there may be another steel plate in the way.. Just pull the 4 (screws i think) and remove.. It'll be clear to you once you see it. You should be able to find the glass in a junk yard fairly cheap. If not, drop me a line and I can likely get one in your area through one of my wholesale accouts. Or if you run into trouble jest ask.. I've done who knows how many of them

Forgot to note, pull the wiper. Just lift the bolt cover and it shou be a 10 or 12mm bolt.. Then jiggle the wiper arm off.. Sometimes it takes a min because it is lightly pressed onto the stud. The spoiler shouldn't need to be removed as there is ample room to slide the glass past it while putting it in.

I had to actually go to Cincy, and it was $300. but i do still have the glass, not sure if I want to sell it though what if i break mine? Hit me up clund.

So I ended up just getting a whole new lift gate off of a 98 from a yard for $400 and put it on today. Only problem ended up being that the wiring harnesses are different between a 98 and an 02 so I need to find the time and motivation to swap over the power lock box and whatnot so I can have my power locks and sliding window back. Fortunately the light harness is the same so no worries there

try using a coat hanger, attach a small rope or cord and use the wire hanger to snake up (or down) and attache the other end of the rope/cord to the harness and pull slowly till you can pull it thru......good luck.....

The people who assemble the gate in Japan must have hands half the size I do. I've got the harness out if the old one and everything undone in the new one except one plug on the drivers side just below the window that is impossible to push the release button and pull on at the same time

rear windows rail problem

Hi all on my 4runner 2001 all the rear back liftgate door glass ... the rail is rusted and the wheel is stuck in rust so I would like to change the 2 rail but how's that fix to the glass ?

if anybody could show me a picture of the regulator connection on the glass harnet and rail will be great because diagram don't show it good .

I hope you find something on rear fiberglass fender because I am looking for ti to loll my driver side rear fender who goes down to the rocker panel is full rusted
I remember on my 1990 4runner toyota was making some part to fix the flare fender rust all that kind of part is discontinued to bad they nice fit on it was to good
