Rear hatch opening limiter.

Looking for a good way to limit the height that the hatch will open. I have a low garage door.

I've used an elastic cord, but I'd like something more "automatic".

Just looking for some ideas.

Same deal here. I got some of that foam insulation stuff for waterpipes, like those noodles for swimming. Taped them to the garage door wherever the hatch would hit. Problem solved as hatch can now contact door safely. Still got to watch head on corner of hatch though :bash:

Why dont you just look for some shorter hydraulic shocks that raises the hatch.

I keep a small black pillow in my back seat that I use to keep the rear hatch from hitting my garage door. I don't open the rear hatch in the garage often though, because I'll usually just lower the rear window to access the cargo area when parked in the garage.

Try some black cord, like the stuff used for boat tarp tie downs, not the elastic type. Tie one end around the upper hatch lid lift mount, and fasten the lower end around the black barrel of the lift tube using a small hose clamp. You can adjust the cord at the clamp end until you get just the right amount of lift restraint. The cord shouldn't get in the way when you close the hatch, and if you decide you don't need it anymore, just remove it, nothing permanent was changed.

Two days after I brought it home I put a little scratch in it below the license plate where it hit the garage door.

I do the same as you - except I use a towel which is stored in the cargo area if I HAVE to open the back...or if I have a lot of loading/unloading to do and it's going to/from the house itself I'll just back the 4R into the garage.

I'm with you....I have to use a towel to pad the lift gate when opening it in the garage. I like the pipe insulation idea though.

Really makes me appreciate the barn doors on my Burb.

I went about it the opposite way.

I put some foam pipe insulation on the bottom of my garage door where it would hit the liftgate. Now I just ease it up and all is good.
