Rear lift gate locking mechanism 2004 - 4Runner

Rear lift gate locking mechanism does not engage the lock position. You can hear the motor trying to close the door, but does not lock it. Have changed the computer, cleaned out rust, lubricated all moving parts. Any ideas??

Did something get jammed in there when it was closing one time? Maybe there is an adjustment -- and the latch slipped open a bit?
