Rear Liftgate Struts Blown

My 2010 SR5 just blew the rear liftgate struts, have this happened to anyone here? With only 22,000 mile still kind of early for both struts to give. It's so bad that when you open the liftgate all the way you need to hold it because it will fall to less than half way. I'm on vacation now but once I get back home next week will be going to the dealer for replacement.

Mine does that when the rear window is down and I try to lift the gate. Was your rear window closed?

Agreed!!!!!!!!!!

Well apparently this is happening to all 5th gen T4R because when I went to the dealer they had a back order of the struts nationwide. It took a week to get them and about 15 min to replace, all covered by the warrantee. :thumb3:

Joaco10SR5, thanks for all the information and reply to my PM.

Just to let forum know, the same thing happened to my 4runner.
I took it on a vacation trip to SC and rear liftgate struts blew @ 4k. This is really unfortunate thing to happen when you are on a vacation...I had to ask my wife to hold liftgate :trophy: to load all the luggage going back home.

Taking 4runner the dealer on Wednesday... will keep everyone updated.

when you guys roll down the back window do you hear any noise while it lifts up or down? it sounds like something needs to be greased up or oiled

Mine keep the door open fine with the window down.

16 months and my rear window doesn't make any funny noises.

Nothing is wrong with mine either. The OP made a broad statement a few posts up that EVERYONE must be having the same problem since they were put on back order and it took him a whole week to get them. While that is fine for you to believe, nothing is further from the truth. The reason is ALL Toyota parts in general are not in the right places through distrubution or are short because of the disaster this spring in Japan. Even the vehicles made over here in the states use parts made in Japan. Toyota is getting it sorted out and will be back to normal inventory levels by spring 2012.

Please, those of you who have had NO problems with the rear liftgate shocks post in this thread too so people who are researching a 4Runner to purchase will not get the wrong idea that EVERY ONE who has this vehicle has the rear liftgate support issue. This is how rumors and myths get started...people believe everything they read on the internet. Thanks.

What's great about the internet is that everyone has access to it. What's bad about the internet is that everyone has access to it !!

No problems with my hatch struts !!

No problem with my 2011 and the hatch struts. Now that I am thinking about it , no problems with anything except the door ding some a$$ gave me!

Mine almost decapitated my girlfriend the other day because it popped up with so much force (innuendo?). So it's working great but my TE only has 7000 miles on it.

Paintless dent removal !! I found a guy that does this who is extremely good and if the paint is not broken it will look absolutely perfect when he is done. It's well worth the $45 per door ding. Given the 3 cars we have here I think I've used him at least a half dozen times over the last few years.
