Rear Mount Turbo exhaust

Why would the rear turbo need tuning more so than the TRD supercharger? If anything, the TRD would need it more considering the sky high intake temps the roots SC generates versus the low intake temps that the remote turbo provides.

This is a true statement but tuning is always a safer way, not to mention you can get better gas mileage and power out of tuning. I would never turbcharge any car in the world without a wbo2 and some way to tune, but thats just coming from a guy thats been tuning for 14 years. I guess I dont know what I'm talking about.

I'm not saying that tuning wouldn't be beneficial. I agree that in a perfect world, you would retune for every change, especially when adding boost. However, these ECMs are "locked" and being able to retune isn't as easy as hooking up a laptop to the OBD2 port and reflashing the ECM. There are ways to compensate (retune by other methods), but it's pricey in comparison. Because the ECM already accepts a roots blower pushing 7psi, there shouldn't be any reason why a turbo pushing the same 7psi, with lower intake temps and much less parasitic draw should cause an issue.

LMAO, really think 7psi is the same on different turbos or superchargers? If thats true why would you ever buy a larger turbo. I hope you dont think so you can run more boost. My 16g turbo at 30psi pushed 550cfm of air. My hx40 would push 800cfm at 30psi. Thats a huge difference in amount of air and the needed a lot more fuel for the larger turbo.

So if the turbos wheel effeciency is the same as the supercharger than yes 7psi would be the same. I highly doubt the trd sc and that rear mount turbo push the same air at 7psi.

I think you're confused.

You're letting the tail wag the dog. 7psi at the manifold is 7psi at the manifold. When you go with a bigger turbo, yes, you are doing it to increase the mass of air per unit of time that the engine sees. The byproduct of this is that by forcing more air into the cylinders, you're going to have to have an increase in PSI, because the size of the cylinder didn't change, but the amount of air that you're putting in there did.

Well said. :D

Not trying to jump in the middle of this, but Clownmeat checked his AFR with a wideband and it was spot on if I remember correctly. Tuning is always beneficial if you know what you are doing, but in this case, it isn't necessary, and I think that is ultimately what is being argued here. Ok, I will step back now.

Well I work with clownmeat and helped him build his and we don't have a wideband. Lol.

Nevermind then, I thought he had a wideband hooked to it at some point, but I might have been thinking of an intake air temp guage, sorry.

Lol, so you're saying 7psi is not 7psi, but 7psi can be 7psi only when it is 7psi. I get it!

Finally was ably to do the tundra brake upgrade. Definitely worth the money, a must with the turbo, even if you don't have a turbo and have the stock tires highly recommend and not too expensive, really easy to do as well.

Has anyone else picking up the custom exhaust from yoterman and put this turbo setup on their 4runner? I want to know how it went or how it's going for someone who has never worked with a turbo before. I like the idea of this but I could see me getting lost along the way.

No one has gotten a pipe from me yet. I've had a few people ask about them, but I've been so slammed at work I haven't been able to really get serious and start fabbing. And about your question, the turbo pipe is just one piece to the puzzle. I wouldn't really recommend anyone to take on a project like this without some help.

Ya it looks like a fairly serious undertaking. Seems like the parts list is pretty straight forward just following what you picked up but getting oil from the engine to the turbo and back seems like some serious work. I was hoping someone else had done it who wasn't experienced with turbos and had some success. Too bad.

I PM'd about getting a pipe but havn't heard back. I've been wanting to do this for a while and finally have the funds... more or less. Once I get yotermans pipe and everything else I will start on it and try to keep everyone updated. Yoterman, I know you're busy, but when you have some time let me know and I will try to get an exhaust from you. Especially if you wanted to do a first-to-buy discount, haha.

Sorry about not getting back to you. Just been crazy at work. My plans cutter is broke and I should get it back from the company fixed in a couple weeks. Them maybe we can get this ball rolling.:D

I didn't want to bother you or anything like that, I figured you were busy so it's not a big deal. When you get your cutter back let me know, I'm excited to get it going!

Cool thread. Possibly on my long list. I miss my old Firebird's power.

How does your rig hold up with Clownmeat's in a race now? Also now that you've turboed do you have before and after numbers with mpg just for kicks? I don't think many people who turbo do it for better mileage.

I'm interested in the MPG numbers as well. I've heard that people who go from N/A to S/C on these motors typically pickup a mpg or so. I'm interested to see what turbocharging does.

It would probably get better fuel mileage if I didn't have my foot in it all the time:D but I've gotten around 13mpg in town driving like an old lady. Lol. But that's with a 5" lift, 33's, and a boat anchor for a treat bumper. But if I was concerned about mpg's I'd drive my 94 si civic. Lol. Performance wise it's awesome. It's not really a race between me and clownmeat since our runners are exactly the same. ;)
