Rear Mount Turbo Questions

I can do years of research, I am 100% well aware of the flaws of these turbos, but if I can't afford a name brand turbo, and want to do something like this, it is my decision, it doesn't mean I did not research enough. For my application, I BELIEVE this will be ok, it may blow, but it's all a learning experience, I can drop a $3000 turbo in, and I could still **** something up. It is all a matter of preference, price range, and abilities. It takes 10 seconds to find all of the negatives of an eBay turbo, but there are also thousands of people, including a few that ACTUALLY run them on 4Runners that have had success, and they last years. Thank you for your 2 cents but it does not really apply to me, I have researched HOURS on this, and talked to numerous people that have had success with this. I do not know your experience, or how much you have researched this, but maybe if you researched more, and really delved into this set up, then maybe you would see that if set up correctly, it can be a reliable set up.

Hey man was just giving some crap. I know people have success on chinese parts. I have also.

My experience is from many people I know running these ebay turbos (I always avoided them after seeing some major failures). We have seen them come with cracked exhaust housings and have seen them crack on the first warm up. Propellers tear apart and suck into motor. Seals blow and gives a smoke bomb down the road/track. For about the same money you can get a used quality turbo that will last sometimes forever.

In most situations the turbo is a very important part of the motor and its usually the one thing you never go cheap on. But in a rear turbo setup its worth the risk I guess.

A lot of people will run these turbos during new motor break in to avoid destroying there nice turbo from debris.

Alright, I understand. Sorry if my response sounded super defensive, running on 3 hours of sleep so that tends to happen.

No your good!! Im jealous I cant do this build. Wife has to give me the okay for anything anymore. LOL.

I have a plan built out for my turbo setup. Engine bay mounted setup with a cxracing turbo manifold that I plan on rewelding for strength as seen in this kit (cxracing.com: CXRacing Turbo Kit Manifold Downpipe for 95-04 Tacoma 5VZFE 5VZ-FE 5VZ).

They will sell just the manifold, run my own piping and intercooler. I plan on doing an e85 setup so 450lph fuel pump, larger injectors and fuel pressure regulator. Holset hx35 t3 turbo and 10psi with AEM FIC tuning.

So far I have the fuel pump, intercooler, piping, bov, and some other parts left over from my turbo DSM days. Just need to convince the wife its worth it. Still cheaper than a new SC kit.

Yeah, a few years ago a supercharger would be in my price range, not any more though... Also, who doesn't love the sound of a turbo?

Honestly, despite all the issues that may arise (ebay turbo or not) I say do it. You will learn a ton about wrenching on your car (if this is your first project car) and you learn even more when you break stuff. I'm sure JayRolla knows what I'm talking about, I had a '99 GSX as my first project car. :D

Oh I'm doing it all right! I know I am going to screw stuff up, but that's how you learn, and there are tons of people on here that have offered their advice. I have had this 4Runner for a few months, and have already spent WAY too much time and money on it. I love it and have thoroughly caught the mod bug.

Sweet!!

Me and some friends made our early livings off DSM's. And some still do. They have mainly moved to building new GTR's but that was our backbone. Mitsu turbo power. I still plan to build a 2g auto drag/street car. Most likely will be before the turbo 4runner.

Nothing on the street can take an AWD Auto Turbo.

I have had a few people tell me to use old DSM parts for this build due to the availability and build quality, but I don't really have the time to go digging in junk yards right now

MHI (Mitsu Heavy Industries) makes some of the best turbos. Only issue is they use a proprietary mitsu exhaust housing instead of a standard t3/t4. So flanges and stuff are harder to find for custom setups. Holset turbos use t3/t4 so very easy to swap into vehicles.

I made 405whp on an Evo 3 Lancer stock turbo. Full boost at 3-3500k rpms. They are beast turbos. Never was able to dyno the holset setup but it was over 500whp easy.

Why haven't you installed the turbo yet? I have to get funds approval from the boss-lady too so I'm sure you have more than two people living vicariously through you.

Not to sound negative, but I see SOOO many things wrong with this. And every time some tries to say something the OP gets defensive.

As everyone keeps saying..."you'll shoot your eye out!".

I apologized when I sounded defensive(hard not to be when people simply say you CAN'T do something), said thank you to anyone that offered any kind of advice. And sir, you are not offering any constructive advice so please don't say you see SOOO many things wrong with this, when all this is is a post to get some of my questions answered, most of which have been. If you see something specific that I have done wrong, or a warning about something specific, and wish to give me constructive criticism that will actually be beneficial to my project, then I am all for it! If you do have any constructive advice I would be grateful for it. I apologize if this is not the response that you wanted your comment to muster, it is hard to tell what you really meant over the internet. Have a good day.

here you go, getting defensive again.

The first thing I see wrong is that you do not want to take the time and invest in good quality parts to do this job right.

Second, This was started 2 months ago and you had no clue what you were doing or which way to go and now, you "know everything" and have researched for HOURS.

I was your age once and had big dreams of turbos and superchargers and being the fastest on the street on and on and on, but here's something everyone needs to learn "How fast can you afford to go?"

YOu didnt even know about the wastegate and its function (springs and such) 2 months ago and now you have it "all figured out"

Let me ask you...have you thought about what its going to cost to run a 7th injector (Fuel management ecm....standalone or piggyback)? Youre going to need it if you boost.

I never claimed to know everything about this, I am not trying to be defensive, I am simply trying to work my way through this. Oh, and why sir would I need to think about how much money it would cost to run a URD 7th injector kit if it is not needed, the stock fuel system is rated up to 7psi by TRD, others have also done this without the 7th injector, all of which I have looked into. Also, I am not trying to go fast by any means, I am trying to do something to my vehicle for my own benefit, sound, a bit of performance, and the wealth of the knowledge of doing something my self. I am well aware that if I dive right in completely clueless I will screw something up. That is why I came here to seek advice from the hundreds, if not thousands of people that have more experience with this than I do. Please do not keep assuming things about me from one simple post on a forum, I have done my researched, talked to a bunch of people through pm's, and talked to a few mechanics in my area. I am figuring it out, there was no point in which I claimed to know everything. Thank you for specifying what was wrong like I asked, but you seem to be falsely interpreting a few short replies on a forum as knowing everything about me. :thanks:

Matt doesn't have everything figured out,if he did he wouldn't continue to ask questions and have his turbo setup running already. I don't see anyone telling him he'll shoot his eye out in the figurative/metaphorical sense.

You're new here,do some searching. The guys who have been successfully running rear-mount setups on their 3rd-gens don't use any additional fuel management. Look up Clownmeat for example.

Thank you very much, I have been talking to Clownmeat and Yoterman about this, and they have graciously answered all of my questions. No one that I know personally has experience with turbo's, so this forum, and some other forums are the only way I can get specific advice. I am aware that some people said that I should be careful what I am getting myself into, because I have such little experience, but everyone has been kind enough to wish me luck in my endevours.

I meant the search thing towards jasonochs25 LOL And by the way it is safe to pour oil in the compressor before running a new turbo, I believe when Jay meant damage due to over oiling it's from not running a restrictor in the feed line.

Yeah I know, I was just saying. And I know about the oil thing, I got the lines figured out and already purchased one with a restrictor flange. I was just screwing around about the oil in the compressor, in my head I was picturing someone filling the whole apparatus to the brim with oil and then trying to install it. It was probably funnier in my head...
