Rear O2 Simulator

Hey guys haven’t been on in a while, 4Runner is ready for inspection but I can’t get my P0420 code to clear. I’m sure that it’s either the cats not being efficient enough or a tiny leak somewhere. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s easier and cheaper to build a simulator for the rear O2. The URD one is $120, I’ve been researching building my own using the capacitor and resistor.

Does anyone know where you can buy these now that RadioShack is gone in my neighborhood? Also if it’s an online only thing where do you suggest and what (part number or link greatly appreciated)
I’m going to dig around and see if there is an electronic supplier near by.

I don't know if Fry's exists on the east coast, but that's where I bought my resistors when I wired in my piggyback controller. If not, Ebay will have everything but be prepared to wait for them to ship from China.

I bought a bunch of resistors off Amazon when I did mine, it costed around $10. I ended up having a capacitor laying around so I didn't need to buy them.

Mine lasted about a week (just enough time to get PA inspection). The cap exploded and the resistor melted.

Mine lasted a couple days, then stopped working.

I’ve had the URD O2 sim in for over a week and it’s fine.

I’d say go URD.

Thanks for all the replys. I just need it to pass ny inspection, no lights and aloud up to one readiness not complete. I’ve tried to time it perfect with a reset and drive to the shop but it always seems to pop the light before I get there.

Moving forward I’m going to see about a cat replacement or dig into more why I’m getting the light to begin with.

I did that trick to a 4.3 Bazer my sister had and got the CEL to go out and it passed a CA smog test that way.

Bummer. Sounds like it got a little too hot.

Standard resistors and caps are usually only rated to 85°C. If you don't want to spend big bucks for MIL-SPEC or high temp components, heat shielding or locating a sufficient distance from heat sources is necessary.

X2. I've read mixed reviews about the homemade O2 simulator, but mostly negative. I've used the URD for 5 years now, no issues no CEL.

My dads celica was doing something similar. I forget the code but it had to do with cat efficiency. We used a spark plug defouler. Just have to drill it out so the sensor fits. This works because it removes the sensor from the stream of exhaust but it can still sense the exhaust. Worth a try for how cheap they are.

I have ran the URD 02 sensor for over a year now. It has held up to heat, rain, water crossings, snow/ice, and a good bit of off roading in teh middle of no where. The $100 for the product is not the cheapest but it is less than my time and having to do it multiple times.
