Rear power window switch help

Hello T4R family,

I stumbled across this site recently and have been addicted ever since. Instead of just lurking I figured I'd introduce myself and learn from you at the same time.

I have a '02 4runner sport. I've been trying to do the additional rear power window switch mod and I'm running into some confusion as electrical is not my strong suit. I've searched a million times here, 4crawler, yotatech, blah blah and I really just need some clarification.

Whoever has done this mod, when tapping into the wires
1) Are you doing it from the relay located in the rear side panel or are you doing it from the ECU in the back door?
2) Which wires are needed for this? W/B is ground, G/Y and G/R are the up/down, and the blue is the 12v power from what I can see. Do you use a 5pin monetary switch, and if so are you running 2 ground wires to the switch along with the 12v and up/down.

I'm getting a bit of tunnel vision and I'm starting to think that I'm over thinking it... so I decided to swallow my pride and ask for some help.

You pretty much have it figured out. The G/Y and G/R at the Back Door ECU are the circuits that matter. You can get your 12V and Ground anywhere. Where are you planning to mount the switch? That will dictate your 12V and ground sources.

A 5 pin window switch like you would have seen on VW, GM, Ford etc will work fine but you'd have to be bypassing the BDECU and going directly to the motor. If they are in line, 12V would be center, and if memory serves me the two outer(1 and 5) would be grounds, the last two would be to the motor.


What would be even better is if you could source a switch like the one in your center cluster, or just an on-off-on momentary. The Toyota switches simply ground either the G/Y for down, or the G/R for up. Piece of cake!

I am looking to mount the switch in either the rear door panel or the rear side panel. I have no preference, although my confusion comes in bc from ever search I've done it seems people are going straight from the relay which would be in the side panel and I don't see a way to do that from the wiring diagrams in the FSM I have.

This is the switch I'm using http://www.gasgoo.com/auto-products/electronics-parts-822/67449.html#img400 and I would prefer not to go directly to the motor only bc from every post I have seen it doesn't seem like anyone else has had to do that.

My frustration comes in bc I am able to get the switch to work in sections. Either it will only go up or visa versa. Or it will automatically go up the second I touch the ground wire to the pin. I'll take pics as soon as I can when it's not late. I pulled a switch out of a 3rd gen (96-98) but I haven't tried it yet, my thought process there was any rear window switch should work. Also I'm using 14g wire while the other wires are 18g. I don't think the 14g should create enough resistance to cause a problem but I'm going to pick up some 18g just to be sure.

The problem you are having are due to the inversion of power and ground the generic switch does. Here is a diagram

So in the down position you are Powering 2, and grounding 1.
In the up position you are Powering 1 and grounding 2.

The back door ECU doesn't require you send power, it only needs ground, but at two separate spots. You can't really do that with that switch. You are, but you are also sending power to a ground circuit. All in all, not the best choice. You could run direct to the motor, but I would think you'd need some diodes in there. Better to use an on-off-on momentary and call it a good deal.
