Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement

Hi Everyone,

I purchased my 2011 4Runner SR5 4WD used with 82k on the odometer. I've finally figured out (thanks to this great forum) that my 4Runner suffers from the "4WD Rear Propeller Shaft (Driveshaft) Clunk/Thunk Noise" that is covered in T-SB-0040-12. Since my vehicle is a good 20k miles out of the powertrain warranty I think it's all on me to fix this issue myself.

The solution is to replace your rear propeller shaft with a newer version. I looked in the repair manual and it appears to be a simple unbolt the existing and replace with the new one. I don't do a lot of my own vehicle work but this one seems pretty straightforward. Anyone perform this repair themselves and have any advice on how challenging this would be to do myself?

Hi Everyone,

Since my vehicle is a good 20k miles out of the powertrain warranty I think it's all on me to fix this issue myself.

It would be worth printing the TSB and taking it down to the dealer and asking them about it. They might cover it anyway since it's a known issue. It certainly can't hurt to try.

Grease the slip yoke, and do so every few thousand miles. That will fix the problem for 99.99% of people. The problem is that no Toyota service departments own a grease gun.

If it has never been greased (most likely), it will take a good portion of a 14oz tube of grease.
