Rear Recovery Point Interest

Will these come powdercoated?

We aren't planning to at this point. It would give you the option to spray paint or powdercoat whatever color you want. Powdercoating all of them would add weeks to the manufacture time. Not to mention organizing how many want theirs powdercoated and how many want theirs bare.

Yes they don't look all that strong, or at least the cross member they're welded too doesn't.

Depends on the model year. The 2003-2004 (and maybe 2005) loops are fairly suspect. However, at some point before 2006 Toyota beefed the front ones up considerably. Instead of being welded to the bottom of the cross brace, they now go completely through a much larger boxed down member and are welded front and back. The down member is in turn welded solidly to the frame. The loops themselves are 5/8" steel, which should have an ultimate yield strength of about 30,000 lbs.

I think Toyota realized people were using them as recovery points and modified them accordingly.

The rear loop is still of the more sketchy construction, like the pre 2005 fronts.

I'll have to take a better look at mine in the day time to get a better idea of how strong the cross member seems to be, it was dark and I was using a flashlight and I only took a quick glance.

When I cut off my rear crossmember to mount my rear bumper in the future, I can keep it intact for you to weld onto your truck. LOL. I've also designed in my head a bolt-on center rear bumper section with full swing out tire carrier (like the C4 Fab front bumper but for the rear) I'm sure I could sell those like hotcakes.

Reroute your pipe to the side, add your recovery point and cruise with the rear window down worry free!

Just additional recovery points on the corners you can use. Some people remove the hitch to gain clearance for wheeling purposes or reduce weight. A receiver hitch shackle adapter will stick out backwards and I've seen my brother's get grinded against rocks in Moab. (Guess he could of removed it until he needed it) Ours are tucked up nicely. I will admit the receiver hitch shackle adapters will be strong and easy to use especially with a soft shackle.

Departure angle isn't effected on my 4R or the FJ.

Also... if you happen to have something attached by the hitch (e.g., a tire & hi-lift carrier like me), it allows easier recovery without swapping out the carrier. :wink2:
