So I sourced an E-locker for my '02 4Runner and rather than modifying my existing housing I opted to also source a 4Runner E-Locker axle housing w/ABS sensor. After some consideration I've decided that it just makes sense to replace the axle bearings (even though the truck drives extremely smooth) because my truck has 220k miles on it, I don't know when they were last done... if ever, and I have access to a full shop press and bearing splitter.
After reading a few install threads (including BFAD's) and some youtube videos it looks like measuring the end of the inner retainer to the end of the axle shaft is a very important step. Apparently you need to set the retainer exactly the same so isn't pushed out too far or too close, affecting the inner axle seal. One youtube video even mentioned that they are typically different from side to side.
Is there a way to measure the new housing's inner seal to know how far I should press the outter (the furthest one from the drum, closest to the splined end of the axle) axle retainer on? I'm sure there's got to be a standard distance, or way to measure the new housing, otherwise how would the dealer do this job and not have it leak?
Typically I'd say that it would be prudent to assume the housings to be the same, and to just take the measurement from the axle/retainer, but I don't know if the e-locker and non-E-Locker housings were exactly the same at the ends. The new housing is from a 2000 and I have a 2002 4x4.
Has only else done this with success? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
