rear spoiler

I just had my dealer install the rear spoiler with the new LED third break light. I don't like that the original light is still working.

The dealer told me that the original light has to stay on..for the one on the spoiler to work.

Is this true, does anyone have the spoiler with the factory light turned off....

Your dealer is full of it.

If the light on the spoiler is wired correctly, you should be able to pull the bulbs out of the original light and the spoiler light will still work.

Why don't you just try pulling them out to see. No harm there. Worst case scenario is you have to put them back in and find another way (but i would bet this will solve the problem).

Only thing I can think of is if it's a light it must work or you could get a ticket like on over the road trucks..Every light has to work but not sure if this applies to cars or not.

I can remove the bulb, from the light on the gate, but the question is do 4R have burned out light indicaters....so if I remove the light will a warning light inside go on.

yep...you got bs'ed by the dealer. my dealer even recommended that my uncle disable his third brake light when he installed his spoiler on his avalon.

When I installed the aftermarket spoiler on my 4Runner, I just left the original third light in working order. My idea behind that was to A): not get any bulb outage warning lamps inside, B): not to break the seal which may allow water/moisture to leak inside, C): no one can see the old third brake lamp because your spoiler will cover it up, and D): the spoiler is NOT super strong so if you were carrying something on top of your runner in the future and it accidently slides backward to break your spoiler; then you would still have the operating third light already in place until you can order a new replacement spoiler! Even a small child might playful try to hang from it and dislodge the screws basement platform within the plastic spoiler. My new spoiler has a LED brake lamp so the power wattage draw of the two working together is minimal.

I don't think there is a Brake Light indicator.

I got mine from Spoilerdepot.com back in May '04 including painting and shipping for $298.00. I believe they are a bit cheaper now......some on here have being stating prices in the $215-$250 ranges. Spoilerdepot will paint the spoiler to the exact Toyota manufactuer's paint code. I didn't have any problems as they used FedEX or UPS ground so you can track delivery. I believe all of the aftermarket spoilers have a different 3rd brake lamp than the OME models. I like the fact that my spoilerdepot model has a LED like lamp which is much brighter than the OME. Also be advised that the 3rd brake lamp is kind of lower than the OME one, which is directly on the back/flat part of the Toyota spoiler. In my opinion, the lower aftermarket lamp lense allows smaller vehicles to see you better. It's a rather easy modification.....you only have to drill 4 holes in your liftgate. The directions are pretty clear. Be advised that I had to drill a larger hole from the inside of the double sheet metal rear deck lid in order to access one of the screws to hold the spoiler on but the LOOK is well worth this mod to me. I took a look at the factory spoiler that I have and also what did they do with the liftgate light.

There is no liftgate light to look at.
There is an indent that was never punched out and so no light was ever there.

I got my spoiler from spoilerdepot.com. I guess you can buy one from your dealer. I installed mine myself--i don't trust my dealer drilling holes in my car. Um, all you have to do is cut the wires going to your brakelight before the place that it's tapped by the spoiler. That's what I did. And yes, i agree with the guys that your dealer is dumb.

I got my spoilerdepot spoiler painted for 159 + 26.50 shipping in april 2004. (Spoilerdepot was selling some on ebay) Ooo and there's a lifetime warranty on the paint--whatever that means. As for installation, I did it myself with the help of a friend. Piece of cake: just poke some holes and screw it in. But don't do it yourself if you don't think you're up to it.

i'm getting my spoiler installed this saturday. I'm going to the dealership, but they're bringing in these aftermarket guys to do it for me onsite. Otherwise the OEM spoiler would cost too much. i think i'm just going to leave the original 3rd break light on. i dont want things to short on me. $500 includes install. i know if i searched i could have gotten a better deal, but eh, i just want to do already.

question...for all you who installed spoilers, how do you guys deal with the screws not rusting. is the seal between the spoiler and liftgate that tight?

Just pop the bulbs out of the original 3rd brake light.... you won't have to worry about any kinds of shorts or anything.

Why yes. yes the seals are tight. because the professional installers will still use the same seals the come with the spoiler.

Hey o9stealth5, do the instructions from SpoilerDepot show you where to drill (inside or outside) of the liftgate? Any drilling diagrams? I don't feel like paying $100+ for dealer/shop to put it on for me.

If so, can someone post the instruction on here??
