Rear Spring reccomendations and user experience

i dont put much in the back of my truck but i went a free way and installed fj rear coils and got around an inch

I don't know how that is possible since Toyota installed asymmetrical coils from the factory and the icon coils are not asymmetrical. Did you measure it?

Well yeah otherwise I wouldn't be able to make such a claim. Looks like someone else above had the same experience. I get what you are saying though and initially thought I would need a spacer but ended up not needing one.

I would suggest the OME 895 with custom valved Fox resi shocks (adjustables) in the rear. The Superflex are ~15% stiffer than stock (ok with 5100's), the OME 895 are ~40% stiffer than stock and outside the proper working range of the off the shelf 5100 shocks.

i always kept ~100# of gear in my 4Runner and with properly valved shocks the 895's rode just fine. To offset the possible driver side lean (which I never noticed) I installed my fridge & dual batteries on the passenger side of the truck.

i ran the superflex HD's coils originally and they lifted my rear empty over 3 inches. with 200 or so pounds it lowered it to the spec 2.75 inches of lift. they rode very well and i liked the extra height. i now run the Metaltech LT rear springs, i prefer these significantly. they ride very well and are dual rate coils, plus if you ever decide to do longer travel shocks you don't have to worry about the springs. but even with the 8 or 9 inch travel bilsteins i would highly recommend them.superior ride to my superflexes even the standard ones my buddy has in his. oh and these lift the rear pretty much exactly 2 inches from stock.

Are yours the 2" or 3" LT springs? I'm considering making the switch to the metaltech or icon 3" LT springs, but want to know if it is safe to keep running the Bilsteins with them (They're only advertised for 0-2" of rear lift). I'm afraid they will bottom out with that much down-travel.

Also its good to note Metaltech now comes with driver side specific springs to adjust for possible sag.

I an measure my fox's if you'd like to confirm the ride height/shock combo.

Mine are the 2" MTLT springs as well.

i run the 2" Metaltech springs. its just fine to run them with the bilsteins. thats actually what im gonna do with my dads here in a couple weeks. and trust me you already bottomed out those bilsteins with the springs you have. but i would recommend doing extended rear brake lines since they get real tight even at stock droop.

i didnt realize they were side dependent till after i got home from jambo this year and was cleaning everything. reached up and felt a difference in the amount of coil wraps. oh well nothing 20 minutes on the lift cant fix

I've noticed it's something they've just started doing. Just check your coil ID it'll have a "-D"

That's okay, it looks like I'll have to ditch my bilsteins and get Fox shocks for the 3" LT springs anyway. I was just confused because Wheeler's said that 3" springs would work with my 5100's, but everything I've read on here says otherwise.

The general wisdom here is Superflex for comfort and OME for towing/load. Many have said the 895 is truckish and borderline harsh empty and comes in nicely with a few hundred pounds over the rear axle.

Haha at least now you know!

Mine have yet to sag on the driver side with the side specific.

hopefully it'll solve my issue, cause when i have over a half tank its got like 2 inches of lean and it just looks bad to me. but do i love these springs and my stupid amount of travel and flex.

i will gladly shoot the superflex statement all to hell. Superflex springs are terribly stiff. I couldnt imagine a more stiff spring.

same as what LTDSC said. i had the HD's and a couple buddies have the standard superflexes, and while they seemed to be okay as soon as i tried a different spring i realized just how stiff they were. now that i think about it i had some pretty bad axle hop with the HD springs. Talking to a buddy whos had the regulars in he reports the same. in actuality the 895's are a lower spring rate than the HD's and do ride better but have like zero flex (example being my dads trail edition) but it rides decent in the rear. overall i wouldnt recommend those springs to anyone unless they constantly carried over 250Lbs. of stuff in the back to soften them up.

this has been helpful thread as im going to be purchasing rear springs soon when i get my bilstein 5160's

i was planning to buy new rear fj coils (unless i can find used low mileage ones) as i dont want 2"+ lift in the back...im guessing they will give me close to 1" as my old springs are 12yrs old and 150k....are the 895e and swayaway 1.5" the only 1.5" rear springs out there?? my cargo weight is normally a light to medium weight so the 895e's seem a bit overkill- maybe the swayaways??

any recommendations for the 5160's?? thnx

Agreed. if someone claims the superflex HD are for comfort then I'd hate feel what a "firm" ride is.

Mine are stiff as can be and barely droop when towing a 20+ ft boat

Hey, are these 2" side specific rear MT springs listed as Icons on their website? I didn't see any rear springs with a Metal Tech name...?

Thanks !!
