Rear Spring Support Bracket RUST

My right rear spring support bracket has the shock attached to it. Mine has rusted to the point that the shock has broken through. There is very little rust on my frame and frame components but not so with the spring brackets. Has any of you gentlemen had this problem and what was involved in the fix?

I have not had that problem, but the only option I can think of is to weld in a new support bracket. You could fabricate your own or grind one out of a wreck and install that.

Top mount on the round cross member is impossible to completely remove it unless removing the whole body which is a no no. The replacement part will have to be slightly modified and welded from bottom. How ever everything is basically ready for welding. Good tip on removing old weld. Is to cut into with a small wheel cut. Make sure to NOT CUT INTO THE FRAME. Then get out a air chisel and you'll be amazed how it will pop of the old weld/metal. And you'll be left with just little be of grinding to do. Grinding down a weld is very very hard vs regular steel. Thanks to my friend he took care of it.







Alright boys and girl. UPDATE

Primed and painted before the shock mounts gets welded. Because it will be impossible to reach some areas with a brush after the mounts are welded.

Best believe it. It fits exactly in the same original spot. Only thing is we had to cut back the front part of the mount facing the front of the truck. The section that goes on top of the round cross member. But no big deal. My friend cut back the old mount as far as possible. And trimmed back the replacement one and it sits very nicely.





This was the hardest part to weld for my friend. The way the mount goes on the tube. It creates a big gap. The original mount is welded from too before the body goes on. But no big deal. He filled it in pretty solid.

My goal after it's set up. To put grease or just fluid film that I have in a gallon, in the cracks or tight areas. This way it will keep water and moisture out. Anywhere there has been engine oil or geese on a car after a long period of times. There is just no rust.

to answer your question, Toyota sells a replacement part. I don't remember the part # but mr. [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION] can you provide with them , as he did to me.

Is that a rubber drain plug in that picture? I'm wondering if removing that could let you access the upper shock bolt.

I Think it is a drain hole. But I dont think you will get much luck. Notice in other pics where the shock mounts vs the drain plug location

I turned down a otherwise clean '99 because of a broken rear top shock mount.

After seeing this, I'm glad i did.

I don't blame you. But if you don't clean and make the drain hole bigger. Eventually it will rust through no matter what. Mater, mud sits up there. Bad design by Toyota

When I swap my axle I plan to address the shock mounts. POR15, drill a bigger drain hole & oil, grease or fluid film on top of the mount & shock.

Damn right. Fluid film the crap out of the top. Take some gloves. Grab gallon of fluid film. Grab a hand full of the grease and just put it there.

I was bummed to find I have the exact same problem. Instead of getting junk yard cutouts I found the part numbers for factory replacements. From the diagram it looks like there are a lot of frame parts available for the 4Runner.

Dealership wanted $175, found them online for under $100.

Noticed the same here, both with the rear spring and shock mounts, but they are not all that bad (CA 3rd gen). I'm in the process of addressing now with Corroseal, after some initial prep...

Anyone know what these threaded holes are for?

Hey D'arce, did you ever get to install the mounts? Did you do it or did you take it to a shop? Have the same problem now in VA but don't know what to do...

Lol no I'm waiting for a shock to poke through the floor first ha ha. I did however round up all the parts for the f150 fuel tank swap. I figured since the tank has to come out anyway I may as well upgrade instead of putting the old one back in. Did you have a failure or just want to get it done?

Yours rot through or break off the frame?? They are fairly think steel. I had them come loose and even welded plates on them.

What you may find out is your inner frame rail will be rotted out. If so you going to have to fix that too then replace the rear spring shock plates.


Some folks mount the shocks on the outside of the frame and remove them from those inner plates as well.. I know on this forum. Serveral threads exist that have done that. :]
