Rear Springs Opinion

Hey Guys,

I am about to make the purchase on some front Icon coilovers for my 2005 4runner. I am going to go with Bilsteins 5100's or 5160 series in rear as I can get them at a very good price my from work.

I am sure this has been discussed plenty of times as to what rear springs to use. I want to retain a 2.5" lift in the front with a small rake in the rear as I have 2 dogs, one German shepherd pup (soon to be 80lbs) and a English lab (75lbs) with me all the time. I do not plan on adding a rear bumper anytime soon as I will have the front first.

What would be everybody's recommendations on springs be considering the above? I was looking at Eibach as I can get those fairly cheap as well. To note, I do not want something very stiff.

i have the eibach/5100s - wish they had more travel, but ride is pretty smooth. also not running a rear sway. They will support the weight of your dogs just fine

Thanks for the quick reply! What eibachs do you have, do you know how much travel you currently get with them?

I see you have a NJ plate, im right over in PA.

I have the superflexes in the rear and the 620# LB ones in the front. Front travel is good for IFS but I will be switching to Icons come spring (they are sitting in my closet waiting for a rebuild), rear travel is wimpy. limited by the 5100 - look into the 5125 if you want travel, but that is a softer valved shock and can lessen the dampening. I want to run a long travel setup in the rear eventually when funds allow. the 5100 is a decent shock, kinda short, never measured travel. I would get the 5160 if you can get a decent price on them.

I actually grew up in Northern NJ, went to Penn in Philly and am now just outside DC in Arlington. Will be in Philly in a few weeks likely.
 
I ended up getting the Icon 2 inch lift springs (Actually 2.5) and they work great in the back, even with the +135lbs of CBI bumper back there.

The springs are made to match the icon coilovers for relative spring rates front and rear. Smooth ride!

I too am currently running 0-3 lift bilsteins in the back and they are working fine, though I do plan on replacing them with icon rears in the next few months.

Picture here of stock vs 3/2 icon lift. Rake is about the same, just higher.

i have toytec superflex and fox resi's in the rear. I personally think the superflex is a little stiff for my tastes. My front is super soft and i love it, but the rear is a little stiffer.
 
i have 5100's and icon rears. ride is awesome, once broken in. very smooth and soaks up bumps, but handles weight excellently
 
I have the Superflex coils in the rear and am very pleased. When I load up the dog and all my gear, it doesn't even squat under the load. And it rides very well (in my opinion). Not too stiff at all.

I have a 3" lift up front (Eibach 620# coils/Bilstein 5100), and the truck sits almost perfectly level. If you go with a 2.5" up front, I think you'll have the perfect amount of rake once everything settles in.

And as for off-road flex, those Superflex coils and 5100s should give you another 2" of travel. It was my understanding that if you want more travel, you'll need to replace your rear brake line and such.
 
Superflexs has a higher lift coil available now and a bilstein shock to match it I believe. In general superflexs springs over a soft smooth ride. With just dogs in the back you won't get much settle at all.
 
The hd superflexs may be stiff. I'd suggest the standard superflex coil with the regular bilstein 5100s and a rear spacer on the diver side coil.
 
Why not just do the Icon rear spring and the matched Icon rear shocks? Overall the full Icon kit rides well and performs awesome.

I see a lot of people stating the 3" icon springs are very stiff and are better with a rear bumper, what I don't plan on doing soon. But if the 2" ones are not as stiff that might be an option.

Do you have the 2" springs or 3?

Well I figured that since I can just get the billies for a goood price, I might go with the icon 2" spring if it does really measure up to 2.5" and is not as stiff as the 3'" ones.
 
The icon 3in spring is only if you plan to have like 400 pounds of permanent rear weight. You would need at least the full plate bumper with swing out and 35 inch spare and jerry cans (full) and high lift all attached to the back plus a permanent fridge and drawer system full of tools :)

Don't cheap out. The Icon are a far superior damper. Plus they are matched to the Icon springs.

+1 on the Icon 2" spring. Good height, good level of stiffness (not too stiff or too soft) and guaranteed to never sag. There's a guy selling a slightly used set in the classifieds right now too!
 
Hey guys,

I actually have another question regarding the Icon front coilovers, with the extended version would i be able to use them with the SPC UCA's?

Sure. That is not an issue assuming the SPC-LR UCA's don't crumble, crack or fail. But heck, they are cheaper than the other quality UCA's.
