rear squeal - semi metallic brake pads - low speeds

Hi everyone,

After dealing with a seized caliber and losing brakes, I've been on the hunt to ensure my 4runner's brake is perfect. Not to mention the brakes were very weak before then.

2 mechanics later, they assured us the calibers are fine. The brake is much much more powerful. One guy changed the brake pads and adjusted the parking brake.

now there is some brake squeal coming from the rear brakes. I read probably every article there is on 4runner brake squeal and brake pads and parking brake adjustments. Now I finally got a little more information.

My dad didn't tell me they were using non toyota parts, and the rear pads are semi metallic pads. After googling it looks like this maybe my problem.


however I've noticed that their still is a squealing noise at low speeds, no brake pads applied. they do also squeak while braking too. I could understand if they squeaked while braking, but I assume there should be no squeal if there is no brakes applied...?

I'm definitely going to go back and have them fix it, I still want to know what to look for. I might just bite the bullet and have them replace (or i will replace) the rear brake pads with oem.

I've got the same problem. New calipers, rotors, and pads. Squealing while moving whether or not brakes are applied. I've already swapped out the brand new pads with different, ultra quiet pads and the sound didn't change.

are they coming from the back? My guess is the parking brake needs adjustment only thing i can think of.

Mine is coming from the back, but I'm not sure that it's the parking brake. To replace both rotors I had to adjust the parking brake all the way inwards otherwise the rotor doesn't come off. After I replaced the rotor I adjusted the parking brake back out to where it should be. All that adjusting of the parking brake, new rotors, and 2 sets of pads and the sound not only didn't go away, it didn't change. Surely the pitch, volume, or frequency would have changed if it were any of those things.

For the moment I quit worrying about it. I have new rear bearings for both sides that I plan on replacing anyway. I'm just waiting on a press adapter to get here in the mail. It could be the bearing making the noise. Even if it's not, I'll have to pull everything apart again to get to the bearings and I'll examine everything again while I'm in there.

The aftermarket pads in the front have oversized slider pin holes so they slop around a little bit and force the antirattle springs to move around. I need to either shim them somehow or go back to oem. Powerstop pads btw.

That's probably good to check before ruling it out. In my case I know it's the rear. I can lift both rear wheels off of the ground and put it in gear so the wheels spin. I can hear it clearly with the back spinning and the front on the ground and not moving.

That is a brilliant idea.

actually what happened was that the mechanic 'claimed' i never had anti rattle clips on my car. Just wonder how you would let it leave the shop knowing there isn't one installed.... I know mechanics follow reverse order but i feel like that is an item that you should say "hey he doesnt have one of these, lets let him know" . my dad claimed he saw them go flying as they were taking it off. hard to prove...We noticed a rattle, when we complained he knew immediately what it was... so the noise might have started when he put them in. I gotta double check.

Im pretty sure he didnt use OEM anti rattle clips. should i go swap out OEM pads and clips ? to see if that is the issue? or just warp the clips to make sure it isnt touching the rotor

yep def the front is way bigger and stronger than rear.

Thanks I think i might just order this and the pads, and swap them and see what that does.

I wouldn't be surprised if they damaged the parking brakes because they did take off the rotors.

By the way is there a chart or a link on what grease to apply and where to apply it that is recommended here?

I wanted to take off, replace, and lube up the caliber guide pins while im there. it is pretty cheap. what do you guys think?
