Rear Stinger / Tire Carrier

Yes I know that the picture is that of a 4th gen.. but has anyone seen or built a rear stinger onto one of their rigs? I like the idea of the poison spyder diy tire carrier/stinger and am seriously thinking about incorporating one onto the cbi hybrid rear I'll be putting on soon. Whatchu all think???

Do it man, it wouldn't be hard to build!

The only thing I wouldn't like is that it would be a major pain to get in and out of the rear cargo area. Its a pain now with my swing out.

I know people who have done it on their Jeep and they tell me it is huge pain in the ass to access the rear cargo area.

I think they look awesome, but I think it would be tiring dropping the rear tire to get in to the rear cargo area.

I remember someone here doing one. I want to say it was TCMach

It is me! Mine is slightly different from Davids though. On his truck there is no swingout and its just the stinger holding the tire up. When I had mine built it was built up from the swingout I already had on the CBI hybrid. So instead of having to lower the tire to open the hatch i just pull the swingout open.

Not to take anything from your work, but it looks like you added a bunch of extra weight just to have somewhere to attach the license plate. Unless you happen to back into objects a lot?

The stinger latches to the main upright behind the license plate to a post that comes out in the center of the rim. With that latching system decided the rest was an aesthetic choice. Sure all you technically need to protect the tire is the lower tubes and the bottom skid. But then its just a tire skid, not a stinger

I've added a whole bunch of weight to mine for reasons that are really truly unnecessary but I like it and I'm not worried about it. It's not a race car, a few pounds here and there won't hurt.

Nice work TCMach I hadn't thought of incorporating a drop down stinger onto a swing out tire carrier.

Same here. I've been wanting to get it on a scale just to see approximately how much I've put on it.... 500lbs or so? :p

I find that most people over estimate how much weight they have added on.

Skids -120 lbs over stock
Sliders - 80 lbs over stock
Roof rack - 100 lbs
Tools in back - 80 lbs
Larger wheels & tires - 50 lbs
Lights & other small stuff - 30 lbs

Total of nearly 460 lbs I've added. Probably about 600 with my front bumper and winch when that gets put on. It adds up quick. I still wouldn't worry about adding a little tube on the back though to make a stinger.

The 4th gen one you pictured is a swing down carrier. I gave this configuration a lot of thought, and I really liked the looks and the idea of using the tire as a step to get into the back. Also makes it easier to mount/dismount a 100lb wheel and tire at knee level rather than at chest level. That was my thought, anyway. However, every response I've read from someone who actually owns one (lots of jeeps, some K5s and a few toyotas) was that it was quite a pain in the ass to get in the back and they probably wouldn't do it again.

The "stinger" for aesthetic purposes (i.e. not a tire carrier) is just a waste of steel in my eyes, but I have never been one to worry too much about aesthetics. After a decade of wheeling with a rubber skidplate (aka spare under the truck), the idea of the spare tire needing protection on the back of the truck has no merit IMO.

Agreed.

Having wheeled my CJ5 for 20 years with no protection on the tire or a rear stinger the entire thing is just aesthetic, and not necessarily in a good way IMO. I've had mine literally standing straight up and down on the rear tire carrier (bad bounce on dump bump when it was an open obstacle at the start of Hells Revenge in Moab) with no damage other than scratched paint. Hell, I don't even see any scratched paint on that stinger thing you've got going on. :D
