Rear tire swing - regrets?

I am getting ready to order a rear bumper w/ tire swing. I was planning on going with CBI w/ dual Jerry can holder and side hoops.

My only hesitation has been with how it will impact visibility. Its my DD and I drive in downtown Seattle a bunch, so lots of tight parking, and congested roadways. One of the things I like most about the 4runner is how much visibility it has with all of the windows, and I know I will lose some(a lot?) ofthat with the rear tire swing.

Any DDers regret it? Any opinion on having the spare tire aligned passenger vs driver side? I see most folks have it on the passenger side, but I feel having it driver side would allow me to still see my rear passenger blind spot which would be a big boost for changing lanes.

Might want to look into savage off road. Personally I prefer over cbi due to the ability to move it to left or right. And adjustable and add ons.

As far as regrets ? No. should be able to maneuver perfectly fine.

I have a 4th gen CBI rear bumper, and the only regret is a loss in driveability with the extra weight...if you get out and offroad a lot, the added functionality makes up for this driveability issue, however the weight is there...visibility does get cut in half with the spare tire, but you can still see out. CBI can adjust the tire height up and down too

The only time I even consider the reduction in visibility out the rear window is occasionally when I am parallel parking - which does not happen often. In traffic you don't usually need to monitor the people right behind you. Nothing you can do about them anyway.

I only got a tire swing initially for one side.

Then...I built a swing for the other side with 1 can carrier, my co2 tank, and a locking storage box for my recovery gear.

I have a 4XInnovations, if I'd thought about it harder at the time I probably would have gotten a driver's side hinge and had the tire on the driver's side. It is more in the line of sight on the passenger side. It's not really that obnoxious, but it would just be a bit more out of the way on the other side.

I have a 99 with Cbi, duel cans, 285/75 spare, hi-lift, table, and a couple of quick fist clamps for a shovel. Couldn't see poop! So I ripped out the mirror and installed a gps monitor with back up camera. Wired the camera to a dash mounted switch. Works great for me. You also want to look into getting a set of rear body mounts from Sonoran steel.(helps deal with all the new weight, and stops the bumper and body from hitting each other.)
See if Nathan will put a second latch above the lower one. Attached to the side rails somehow. (Above tail light) That should eliminate most if not all the dreaded wobble.

Is the wobble still a thing? I thought they had gotten rid of that.

Rear body mounts are already sitting in the garage(along with a half inch body lift for additional protection)!

If you're worried about visibility go with 4x innovations. Much lower profile & you'll save some $$$

Telling you man. Savage bumper is the way to go. More versatile. You
Can put your swing out on either side. Then you can buy another swingout down the road. Everything is bolt on. Vs being made and welded all together.

i have the 4xinnovations.

only issue for rearward visibility is when parallel parking. i have dual jerry cans too that stick out a bit.

otherwise it's not really noticeable. sure, you see some of your tire in your rearview, but nothing that makes driving difficult.

Sorry, but I'm a short stumpy fingered, gray haired, cranky ol'man. It took me two hours to type the last reply. But I'll do my best.
The wobble. It's a harmonic thing, but when it gets going it will shake. (Alot of weight up high on the swing out,without any support.) The wobble is worse without S.S. body mounts. And all old rubber any where around the rear hatch. Needs to be replaced. Or the wobble will shake the rear hatch until it shivers ur timbers.
The rear camera. Any after market rear view system should work. Just instead of connecting to reverse lights for power. Run a fused switch in the cab back to the camera. :guitar3:

Regrets? I have no regrets about NOT ordering one.

Here is my $500 Savage Rear Bumper (I think the price has gone up slightly). It is very lightweight, fits a full 33" underneath, has no rattles or movement, doesn't block any vision, and I think it looks pretty decent.

I think there is a valid case to be made for deciding that a rear swing out isn't for you. It makes opening up the rear take a few steps. It is more expensive, somewhat compromised view, and depending on what you get, can add a good bit of weight.

But... They DO offer some utility. You can easily carry a full size spare, gain some departure clearance as well as add whatever accessories that you decide to go with. Maybe if you got a sweet roof rack, you could mount things like Hi-Lifts, jerry cans, rotopax packs, but, the roof is not an ideal place for a full sized spare tire.

I have the 4X Innovations rear swing out with added SS solid body mounts. Out of everything out there, I really liked the 4X Innovations design and the Savage design. I really like where Adam at 4X Innovations decided to place the spare. It is not super high like the CBI, and not low like the Shrockworks. It is a stout design that looks to be rock solid. I can still see out the back window, but I DO check my passenger side mirror more for lane changes. Get some FN 5-Star wheels, and you can see THROUGH them! LOL. The 4X latch is also beefy.

I think the Savage would be cool too. It offers better departure angle if that is important to you. Also, it is a bit lighter. It has the advantage of being lighter making mounting it all up a bit easier.

I would google the hell out of examples of both to help you make the choice if I were you.

I built my own swing out and put the tire on the passenger side. Sometimes I do wish I went drivers side with it. However it isn't a super massive issue because I have gotten used to it and have used my side mirrors even before the swing out. So I like it, frees up the storage in the rear and my rack and looks cool!
