Rear Turn-Signal not working....it's NOT the bulb??

driver's side rear ts stopped working (fast blink)....but when I checked it, the bulb is fine. I even swapped that pod to the other side and it worked. The one from the working side, when swapped to the non-working side, still won't work. I've wiggled everything I can see; and the inside contact points seem normal. I've tried the pod in every possible position. I'm pretty darn sure there is no voltage getting to that one. ??? how could this be? Anyone else ever have this??

Bump.....still haven't figured this one out. Reverse light (just one, driver side) and the rear turn signal on the same side don't work. Both bulbs are good. I checked every fuse under the hood and also below the steering wheel.

any ideas?

did you replace the sockets?

Would start by testing voltage at the socket and work backwards from there.

Solved! (for anyone else out there who ever has this problem)

- so, for the entire rear assembly (that being the turn light and the reverse light) is powered by tail/brake light plug-in. If that isn't inserted properly, and isn't making proper contact, the assembly itself won't be energized; and the blinker and reverse lights won't work either. Kinda tough to describe....but essentially, you've got to fiddle with the tail/brake portion and it will fix the non-working blinker and reverse lights.

Great thread. Right rear blinker went out, I assumed it was the bulb. I bought a new bulb from the dealer. The old bulb looked brand new when I removed it. Replaced and still didn't work. Then I replaced the "trn-haz" fuse. No dice. Then I unplugged the power going to rear brake light assembly, and plugged it back in. It worked.

So, no new bulb or fuse necessary. Weird.

Well that saved me some effort, although I already blew money on replacement bulbs. Apparently this applies to other Toyotas as well since the problem was on my Echo

Did you try the non working bulb on the side that is working? That would verify for sure that the bulb is good... or bad.

+1 for this. Very odd. I think my driver side rear turn signal burned out or failed. put in a new bulb and couldnt get it to work. I had to reseat the plug in harness for the brake light/ housing to get it work

So unplugging the harness worked briefly. Unfortunately l, I had to take out the entire taillight housing to clean all the contacts with contact cleaner and an eraser to remove oxidation. That finally did the trick. What a pita

Update:
So I think I fixed my problem - for now. The housing had a bad connection between the metal contacts and wire. I wasnt getting continuity with the wire. So I gently pried this up stripped the wire a little and seated it better in the metal tab contact and was able to get continuity. Taillight is again working,




So I'm having issues, went to the forum and low and behold Im the last one to post.

So anyhow - Im having issues again. Im having some sort of fuse issue or some sort of extra resistance or a short causing the fuse to intermittently blow

Heres my recommendation if the turn signal isnt working after reading and going through all this.

1. Swap the bulb to the other side/ other taillight housing to see if the bulb is blown/ needs to be replaced
2. swapthe bulb socket on the other side to see if the socket needs to be replaced
3. lift up all the metal contacts on the sockets and power in socket to make sure you have good contact and use contact cleaner etc
4. Unseat the power harness into the tail light and reseat it
5. Check the wires into the harness/ tail light for any damage
6. Near the steering wheel on the interior fuse box is a "turn signal fuse" - check this or try replacing
7. in the engine bay fuse box check the Trn/hzd (turn / hazard fuse) or try replacing
8. Take the tail light housing out and check the wire connections. Can use multimeter to check continuity.

Hope that helps someone.
Mines temporarily working tonight, but worried again tomorrow I wont be able to signal a turn and someone behind me will crash

I have a similar problem on my 4th Gen (2005) 4Runner. I was troubleshooting an aftermarket backup camera that died on me and seemed to have screwed up something.

Here are my observations:
-Now all my blinkers are not working - however hazard blinkers work fine and using my keyfob to unlock/lock flashes the blinkers
-Reverse lights are not working (therefore cannot turn on backup camera)
-Center HVAC panel isn’t lighting up (or working) with the exception of just the clock
-received a CEL with code P0705 Tranny Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction; replaced part P/N: 8454004-010 “Automatic Transmission Gear Position Sensor” and it appears there’s no more CEL
- taillights and brake lights are working fine
-oddly my driver window Auto Down function doesn’t work (however I can still roll up/down all the windows).

My 4Runner was working fine before I started to “fix”the backup camera. Now all these things which kinda seem unrelated are messed up. Any clues or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I think this guy is right. The wiring/ electrical components in the aftermarket headlights are crap. IF you have an OEM one and have to replace it, consider swapping out the wires or save the wires at least to replace them.

I replaced the wires with the wires from another after market one that cracked and its fixed for now
