Rear window woes

The rear window on my 2017 is intermittently getting “stuck”. Sometimes it won’t roll down. Sometimes it stops partially down. Sometimes it won’t roll back up. Operating the switch up/down a bunch of times seems to un-stick it. Quick up/down followed by holding the switch up/down. Sometimes it seems like I have to open/close the sunroof to get the rear window to work. Before I waste time taking this to the dealer (it’s still under warranty), just wondering if anyone has any advice or things I should try. I’ve pulled off the panel and there doesn’t seem to be anything stuck in the window channel or otherwise impeding movement. It seems to be an electrical problem... ???

There is a part in the manual labelled “when your rear window doesn’t close properly”. It outlines a reinitialization procedure as well.

Have you tried that yet?

I should have included that in my original post as part of the “what I’ve already tried” stuff. Yep. I tried that. :-(

Try disconnecting both battery cables and then connecting them together for 30 seconds to a minute. Reattach battery cables and try to reinitialize all of the windows and see if that changes anything. It might not, but I’ve had that fix many weird electrical problems on different vehicle makes. It’s simple to try.

You could have debri stuck in the path of the windows.

Maybe open up the back of the trunk door and check for anything messing up with the window.

Many thanks to the folks who gave me some options to try. I disconnected the battery... no luck. I pulled off the rear panel and looked all around and wiped off the track the window moves in... no luck. I’ve done the re-initialize procedure several times... no luck. In fact, now it won’t even go down at all... so I think all of that made it worse maybe the motor is bad... or maybe the electronic brain is messed up. I’ll take it to the dealer and have them fart around with it.

If it is under warranty absolutely take it back.

A funny story (and I know it isn’t your issue) but after I bought my first 4 Runner back in 2007 my rear window stopped working. The car was only 30 days old, maybe a couple hundred miles, and the damn thing wouldn’t work. After a few days I was ready to take it in, was just about to call, and I noticed the window lock was on.

When this happened with my 4th gen I had to unplug the ECU for the rear window (blue box in the hatch) for 30-60 seconds, plug back in and the motor started working again

Sadly that’s not the problem. I did the same thing with my 1998 4runner... except I actually took it to the dealer...

Just gave that a shot. It worked... kind of. The window was previously stuck about 5” down from the top. I was able to get it to roll all the way up. Then I pushed my luck. I rolled the window all the way down. Thinking it was all fixed now, I pulled the lever up to roll up and the window and... no luck now it’s stuck all the way down. I tried unplugging the ECU a couple more times but it’s still stuck completely open.

Dealership at 8 tomorrow. Ugh...

Dealership replaced the motor that drives the window up/down and the regulator that tells the motor if the window is all the way/up down. So yeah.... really broke.
