Rear Wiper - 2 Step Process

Am I wrong in wondering why activating the rear wiper on my 2014 TE is a two step process rather than just one?

Step 1: Turn on the dash switch on the left-hand side.
Step 2: Twist the rear wiper switch on the wiper stalk.

What is the reason for Step 1?

I don't have to do step 1. Mine works from the stalk.

I think the button is for the heated wiper...I think.

What dash switch on left side?
I have never done step 1. Twist wiper stalk either way, and the rear wiper comes on.
 
Okay, maybe there actually is something going on with mine. If the button isn't lit up and I twist the rear wiper I get nothing, no single wipe, no intermittent wipe, no washer fluid. If I turn the dash switch on everything works.

Seems like wiring got fudged after installing aftermarket lights?

The switch is for heated front wipers, if you look on the windshield you'll see the heat elements under the wipers.
 
Yea def sounds like you've got in issue. Heated wipers are nice to have though. Look forward to the winter and not having to stop and knock the ice off them.

I thought this thread might have been about replacing the rear wiper, not needed yet but wondering if it'll be a PITA like the GX was. Ended up always buying the blade insert from the dealer.

I just changed all the wipers on my '13. The nice thing is that you can just buy the rubber and not have to buy the entire metal arm assembly. I changed all of them in like 15 minutes. On the rear wiper you just have to turn it on and turn the car off to stop the wiper mid wipe in the center of the window.

On my back wiper I just twist the knob forward to activate the wiper. The first stop is intermittent so maybe the timer is off on the wiper, try twisting it all the way forward a couple of clicks where it is on constant. If you twist it back towards you the washer should come on with the wiper and wipe 3 times then fold back up in the spoiler.
 
Yea, I hear ya. Unfortunatelty the only place around here that sells the inserts (at least for the GX) was the dealer. I'm sure I should probably look online though.

It is a nice system though (just changing the inserts) just wish they were more available. Toyota def has some unique design approaches to things on their vehicles. I.E. the oil filter, not hard to do and quite well thought out with the little drain/O-ring removal tool, just not something that's at your corner auto parts store. (Then again in Nova you've got the grand choices of Advanced or Autozone or Wally world)

Okay it looks like this is one of these fixed itself problems. I went out this morning and everything worked as it's supposed to.
