rebuild tranny or drop a salvaged one in there?

Hey guys-

Just got off the phone with an Aamco tech reccomended by a great local Yota shop. Transmission is toast after 250k on my 2001 V6 SR5... He quoted me about $2200-$2400 out the door including a new torque converter as well. Comes with a 2 year, 25,000 mile warranty.

Found a local salvaged tranny from a '97 V6 with a claimed 150k on it for $500 including a torque converter too.

Waiting for a call back from the Toyota garage to see what they recommend I do and get a quote for installing the salvaged transmission.

Realistically, I would really just like to get another 2 years out of the truck. The warranty from Aamco is appealing but then again, so is the price on the salvaged..

Just wanted to throw it out there for any input yall may have before making the decision

1sttoyotaparts.com lists a BRAND NEW Transmission, 6 Cyl, 4WD Automatic for $1978.98
That is a BRAND NEW Toyota Trans from a Toyota dealer....


I went to an AAMCO once with an old Camaro I had when I was a teen. I told them to throw everything in the trunk.
A friend towed me to another Transmission shop and I got a full rebuild for LESS than 25% of AAMCO's quote.... Never a prob with that trans afterwards..

That's my experience anyways...

Not to piss on your thread, but you do realize that this is the 4th gen sub-forum, and not the 3rd gen, right? I'm just thinking that you'll get a more thorough response in your gen's sub-forum.

Find a junkyard a340e for cheap, have someone install it. Properly maintained they last a long time, finding one in decent shape with a 30 or 60 day warranty should be easy on car-part.com

And yes this is 3rd Gen appropriate. Oh also do the free valve body modifications, should help with transmission performance and longevity. I just did it on my a340 equipped race car ��

One other thing is that 97 isn't an exact swap your looking for 2001-2002 tranny
