Yesterday our Sunroof (04 4Runner) got stuck open. My wife said it made a clacking noise and then it wouldn't close. It starts closing and then reverses. I was able to pull it closed while holding down the wind deflector and holding the switch. Does anyone know which fuse controls the sunroof? I think I'm just going to pull it so nobody tries to use the sunroof. We've had our car 36 months and 2 weeks. Figures...

EXACTLY what happened to me. I'm also JUST out of warranty, and hardly use the moon-roof.....probably 50 times in 3 years. Drivers side made a clanking noise after opening, and when trying to close, it keeps reversing after a second of trying to close. The passenger side wants to close, but drivers side is obviously the problem. Finally pulled it hard while holding the switch and got it closed. Now it opens up (tilt) but won't slide back a bit. Dealer says tough luck, suggesting it'll cost over $1000 to fix.

I'm ready to join a class action suit. This is ridiculous. I could understand issues like this if they were 10 years old, and heavily used, but this is obviously a design issue.

You pay more for a Toyota because you expect quality. I'll be looking somewhere other than Toyota next time if they don't want to own up to this and repair them.

You might try following the instructions from the TSB in this thread. I did it recently and had good success in curing my sunroof problems. See my post near the end of that thread.

I'd love to do the TSB, but we're afraid to open it again. The couple of times we tried, we got horrible noises, and it would never fully open anyway. We were lucky to get it closed again.

We're just amazed that Toyota hasn't taken responsibility for this. We're not spending $1000 or more to make this work again, and have to wonder how this would affect the price if we decide to ever trade it in. I think mine is now mis-aligned, so I'm guessing it needs more than new grease?

I agree. On sunday I plan on doing the TSB. Ain't no sunroof on our Toyota gonna break. This isn't a ford. lol. Even if it happens where it does stop working I plan to take the headliner apart and do it myself. I absolutely do not have the $3000 or so to fix it. Besides, I've never trusted the dealers since the have ripped me off once too many times.

Just a quick story. I had the similar problems in my 05 recently when I took my Runner in for a grinding type sound in my sunroof when I opened it. They did the TSB and replaced it. All the parts came in and the new motor was DOA, so they reordered another motor. They put the motor in and all was ok, for about 12 hrs. I opened the surnoof on the way home from the gym later that day and it was stuck open! I took it back in again and they claimed that the cassette was not mfgr'd properly and the gears were stripped. So they ordered another. That came in and that one was warped. An engineer from Toyota came out and they ordered a couple more parts. After a total of 16 days out of 30, the sunroof now opens and closes properly, for now. The new track appears to be aluminum as you can see it plain as day because now the cover that goes back and forth sits on top of the rails. Needless to say, my next Runner will NOT have a sunroof. I love them but am not going to deal with this again.

I bought my '03 4Runner on Ebay from some guy on Staten Island (I live in Texas) The first day when I went to pick it up I opened the sunroof and got the infamous cracking sound, Freaked me out! I left the sunroof closed and figured I would mess with it when I got back to Texas.
I had read on a previous post that someone figured it was the factory lubricant which was solidifying and that was causing the problem. When I got back home I opened the sunroof and took out as much of the yellow factory grease that I could dig out (which by the way was caked up in several places) I then re lubed the whole sliding track with some white lithium grease. I have been using it on a fairly regular basis and It has been working fine since then,, Not one problem. Just my 2 cents.
