Recall coming on sunroof

Good Morning,

It has now been four weeks since both of the sunroof problems took place on my 2003 4Runner.

Two weeks ago, they pulled the roof shut. This was done by my new dealer.

According to Toyota, the sunroof system is being redesigned, and there is not really a time to have it fixed. Since the sunroof system comes from Japan, they have to redesign it before they can fix it.

Back to the arbitration/dispute center.

For those of you who have advised that I sell this thing, this is the proof that I keep stating. I can't ever get it to the lot to sell since it keeps breaking.

I honestly do not meen to be a downer on those of you who have / are having the true Toyota experience. Which is hundreds of thousands of great miles under your belts. I just have to get this thing fixed.

My third car is a 1980 Mercedes Turbo Diesel. That's what I have been driving for the last four weeks. It is a pleasure to drive. I can't begin to tell you. But the funny thing is when it craps, it does not bug me. It's 24 years old, not one year old. By the way, the 'ol girl has 275,800 miles on her.

The 4Runner has 25k.

Have a great weekend,

C-:)

Did the problem with your sunroof start after you opened it? I hate sunroofs not because they can rattle (the one on my 95 Landcruiser rattled) but because I never use them. I don't want the thing open and I don't need sun burning my head. I doubt that I will ever open the sunroof on my 4runner. Good luck on the rattle.

It always rattled ....

Hi!

It always had a rattle to it. (No not the auto wind adjuster) That was OK. The first time it made this nasty grinding sound and stuck halfway open and would not close. Toyota put new parts in.

This last time, it pushed it's self back into the housing and stuck back there. It would not close. Toyota had to over-ride the system and close it. Still awaiting a fix. Almost a month now w/o the sunroof opening.

From what I have heard, this supposed "Recall" is is this; Toyota is calling back all of the original parts in the current sunroof and sending out new and improved parts once the old ones are back.

We'll see.

Which Parts?

Do you still have the copys of the Warranty Work done on your 4Runner, if any?

If you do, could you post what they changed out or repaired, would really appreciate it. Would help out a lot of members if they are experiencing the same problem, so they have something to show the dealer.

I am wondering if it is the track or gear assembly is binding. Unless the motor is not all that.

Lemon Law

I saw a sign by the 10 Freeway today advertising lemon law attorneys: 1-800-CA-LEMON.

When I went to buy my 4Runner the first thing I told every salesman was "No sunroof".

Yes, but more than likely it will be fixed and he will not have a problem.

Also, it has to be 3 times to be fixed, he is waiting for the parts to come in I think to repair it.

But I can understand where he has a Moon Roof and can not use it. If I was him, I would try a different dealer.

Anybody have problems with sunroofs on 2004 models? Seems like a 2003 model thing that Toyota got right in 2004.
Just wondering....

I use my sunroof daily and haven't had a problem yet. I have only had the truck for about two months and I've put on about 4,000 miles.

Very good point!

Hello!

According to the invoice dated 04-08-04, "Customer stating that sunroof is sticking." Install "SOP"

$1.3 hours & $122.20 in parts.

CAUSE: Sticking.
CORRECTION: Lubed guides & installed per service bullitin.
COMMENT: Operates normally at this time.

TOY 08231-00801 Noise Kit $103.27
TOY 63207-35040 Base Sub-Assy, Roof $ 48.39
TOY 08887-02004 Body Grease W $ 32.84

Subtotal Parts $184.50
Lab-mechanical $122.20
"Total charge for concern" $306.70

They still have the current invoice since nothing was fixed. I had to use the vehicle after they fixed the belts etc. I suppose that I will receive the rest of the paperwork upon the completion of the work?

Ths sfternoon, I had a call from Toyota Corp. advising that the parts would be sent out next week. In the mean time, the roof makes a nasty GRINDING sound if you attempt to lift it. It will not slide at all.

May 11, 2004

SECOND K-A call from Toyota advising that "Parts should be here by May 23rd. That the new belts any pully's & roof rack will be fixed at the same time."

Keep you eyes and ears open!

And we are waiting. . . .

*** SUN ROOF UP-DATE ***

Hi all,

So, the Toyota Corp offices called me three times to tell me that the parts for the new sun roof assembly came in. THe dealer called me twice.

I made my appointment, took a boat load of photos of the vehicle before I dropped it off and brought it in.

This trip was for the sun roof, dealer damaged roof rack and the passengers seat belt buckle that will wobble loose. Oh and the new belts and pullys make the SUV sound like a turbo.

About three hours into the deal, they called to advise that they did not have all the parts, and that the SUV should be ready by this Friday. (Tomorrow)

What was the point of the call if the parts are not actually here? It sure makes the dealer and Toyota look lame.

Can't wait for this to be over. I have my Dispute Settlement coming in a week and a half. CAN'T wait!

Best wishes and RIDE'EM folks!

Craig-

Man, Sad are you Jinked or what!!! Keep us posted. Next thing they are going to call and tell you that your truck fell off the lift  :(

**** Week what? ****

Still waiting for the roof. Apparently the parts are being made/ordered from our friends in Canada. So, they are no going to be here before this Thursday. Maybe next Monday (06-07-04) it will be done. We'll see. It's getting really old!

Oddly enough, I do get a call daily telling me about the status of the POS.

Count down to selling! :D

I'll let you all know part numbers etc. when I get the invoices.

Craig-

PS Call the 1-800 number and ask for Paul. Tell him Craig from California refered you to him!

Finished product!!!!!!!

Hi all!

I made it into my dispute center meeting before the 4Runner came out of the shop. Toyota actually had the SUV for three weeks to the day!

This is what the service invoice states:

Concern 51: Owner states sunroof sticks open at times... Will not close. Intermentent problem... Special order parts are here.

Cause: Binding sunroof cables.
Corrections: Replace sunroof cables and housing.
Tech Notes: Inspects roof and found that the roof was binding. Contact TMS and ordered new cables. Not included with new roof assemb. We replaced sunroof carrier and sunroof cables. roof operates OK after repairs.

Part numbers

Hertz rental car 037928 $450.00
Housing sub-assy, sl Toy 63203-35040 $500.64
Cable sub Toy 63205-35030 $1080.41
Sublet repairs $450.64
Lab-Mechanical $883.60

Total charge for concerns: $2,914.65

Hey so far it works!

One more week for final decession from dispute center. If no again, off to auto auction! But I have parked it in the garage and I am driving the Benz. Gotta keep it running!

Make sure if you do this that they order ALL the parts. That was the hold up with mine. THye forgot parts after they took it all apart. Also, take pic's of the inside of the vehicle. There is a lot of grease in that roof!

:D

OUTCOME Up- Date

Hi All!

Yet again, I was told NO on my dispute center case. "Not enough proof that there is a problem." Anyone want a 4Runner? Key word "WANT?"

BTW, no out of pocket money. Toyota keeps paying. Truck is for sale. We'll give it a couple of weeks, and then off to auction.

The roof still grinds on the right side, but only when it is hot outside and your trying to close it. This whole thing stinks.

Have a great weekend & good luck! :bs:

Up-Date on new Roof ....

Hi!

So it's been over two months, the roof is acting up again. It's the right side. (Again) Rough grinding sound coming from the track that moves the roof.

I must admit that not being able to sell this thing has been helpful in towing during my move. However, it's time to lower my price and push her away.

Good luck with your Sunroof's and push these guys hard on the TSB's. There is a reason that we are all having these problems. They have to pony up and support their product.

I don't think I will ever have a problem with mine. I hate sunroofs and will never open it as long as I own this 4runner. Never opened the one on my 1995 Landcruiser, or on my Lexus LS400.

Sounds like you got the one that the quality guys at the factory missed. I got my fingers crossed that when I get mine I don't have your mis-fortune. Thanks for posting this....now I know what to look/listen for.

Recall?

Did you ever hear more about a recall? My sunroof just jammed open the other day (3-26-06) on my 03' 4Runner. I have 42K miles so it's out of warranty. I took it to the local dealer. They played dumb and said they had never seen that problem before. They also said it would take over $1,000 in parts and labor to get it fixed. I can't belive it! I saw your post and hope you might have some advice.
