Recommend Some Jack Stands

I use these.

Probably not as convenient, but I like them better than the style with the quick release latch. Being under several thousand pounds of metal weirds me out anyway, and I've heard stories about those quick release catches failing. I prefer this kind for it's 100% positive engagement, but they're getting harder to find.

Be exceedingly careful putting a jack or jack stand on wood. Wood is soft. If the vehicle gets off balance the wood could give enough to let the jack stand roll. Cribbing under a bottle jack is slightly safer, as the vehicle generally has three tires on the ground and is mostly stable, but if you're putting two or more tires in the air, best to use the right height jack stand in the first place.

And don't EVER use a cinder block. Not ever. Those things can explode under the weight of a vehicle without any warning signs, and if you're under something hard when it happens you'll be dead, or wish you were. I'd go under a truck held up by a hi lift before I'd go under a truck on cinder blocks, and I won't ever go under a truck held up by a hi lift.

^^^ This all is absolute truth- read and take heed! Tall, wide, 6 ton jack stands cost less than $60/pair or so no matter where you get them. There's simply no excuse for jerry-rigging support out of something that starts out too small.

If you need more height than the 3 ton stands allow, you'll probably need the stability of a larger base. 6 ton stands are only $40 at HF right now.

I dropped my 4runner off of 3 ton stands trying to do some rear suspension work while most of my tools were in storage. I went and bought another set of 6 ton stands before even trying to lift it off the ground.

Premium price, but they're fantastic jack stands.

Second the ESCO ones. They offer the flat top (rubber cushion) and axle style (curved top) post inserts.

Go big and cheap

Get the cheapest 6 tons you can find. They will be way overbuilt but the wide base is really comforting.

I have one of these; best $300 I ever spent. Picked it up on Craigslist from a local independent mechanic. Mine's in better shape than the one shown here - no rust. It's a Vulcan FL-32, no longer made.


It lifts from 6" to 27", will easily pick up one end or one side of the 4runner by the frame, is absolutely rock solid, and has 5 positive locking notches in its lift range. It does require 150psi air to work. It's purely air, no hydraulic fluid.

I still set jack stands under the frame as a backup if I'm going to be under the vehicle, but this thing has upped safety and convenience by a whole bunch.

I have a 3 ton and 6 ton from harbor freight for a couple of years now. I use it all the time doing mods and they've been great. I also got there 20 ton bottle jack, 2.5hp 125 psi 21g air compressor, breaker bar etc. that I've used doing all my mods with no prob. You can't beat the 20-25% off coupon and free goodies. You can pick up a jack stand for cheaper if you wait for their Columbus day sale.
