recommend some wheels for me

Recently I have been wanting to widen the stance of the 4runner a bit. Spacers would accomplish the goal, but I'm still not 100% sold on using a wheel spacer. It may still be an option, but I would feel far more comfortable with an actual wheel that fit how I wanted.

I started with ...

The factory 5 stars .... and like them, but got a good deal on a wheel tire combo and switched too ...

Then I decided to jump up to the FJ wheels .. partially for the look, partially for the matched spare and, partially for the ease of replacement if I wanted a 6th or really damaged one playing.

So .. since I have done zero research on aftermarket wheels of the 6 lug variety, throw out some opinions to help me please...

Looking for:

more aggressive offset than the FJ's

Simple design

NOT BLACK (lol just not feeling it for my rig)

nothing so expensive that I will cry if a destroy one some day

17" ... I just bought tires so going to a 16" isn't an option and 18+ just not my style for this vehicle.


So ... what would you do?

Since you're trying to avoid black wheels on your truck, I think that your best bet would be gunmetal. I had a hard time finding wheels that I really liked for my 4Runner, but some brands to look into are Level 8, Raceline, Pro Comp, ATX, etc. I just ordered some Level 8 Strike 6's for my 4runner last week (in all black lol) and I can't wait to see how they look. I think that you should figure out which color of wheel you want and then base your decision off of that. Black wheels are going to be a lot easier to find, but if you do some searching then you should be able to find some nice gunmetal wheels for your truck.

A lot of aftermarket wheels come in black or chrome or polished aluminum finishes. Polished aluminum & chrome are a PITA to keep clean due to brake dust. If you let them go long enough they start to corrode too. Silver, gunmetal and bronze are really the only other options I can think of, so choices are limited at that point. I think that's why I prefer the newer stock Tacoma/Tundra/ FJ wheels, as they are mostly silver and a couple polished aluminum finishes. The only downside is the backspacing, as there are no options to get a wider stance without spacers.

That said, Eagle Alloy or Pro Comp make a decently priced wheel, but the finishes are limited.

I like these Pro Comp (sorta remind me of the split spoke Tundra rims)

And also am partial to the Mickey Thompson Classic Locks

I prefer both of those wheels in black, mostly because keeping them clean isn't as big of a factor.

First one I want to say was somewhere off highway 2 close to the road closure ... I think we were exploring a bit after a hike. Second was somewhere near heartbreak ridge, and the 3rd I believe was heartbreak ridge. There area a lot of pics of these places on my website .. Not worried about keeping them clean, I'm not as obsessive about keeping the 4runner clean as some of my cars, but its pretty rare to go more than a week with out at least a wash. I do like the look of the pro comp.

My thing with the black rims.... tires always look dirty when compared to a gloss black rim, if I was going to do black I would have to have a polished lip or something to break up that black to black border when they aren't both the same black.

The other problem I see is when you scrape a black wheel on a rock its really going to stand out, on a silver/machined look, it doesn't show near as bad. That's not to say this is a monster rock crawler or anything, but occasionally **** happens ..

Those little scuffs would be 10x more noticeable on a black wheel.

What about 1/4" wheel spacers and some longer lugs? Wont do much, but it will push things out a tad.

I just hate to see you get rid of the FJ wheels, they look so dang good on your truck.
 
You are correct about the scratches. Pretty scary. I will be carefull when off road. Since this truck (like many others) is 98% on road, I will have to risk it. I would use 4wd a lot more often if I lived somewhere where it snowed. It looks like these guys in CO are having all the fun.
 
I may be of no help here but I definitely think the FJs and the 4th Gen sport wheels look excellent on your T4R. maybe just a small amount of wheel spacer, and/or longer Nuts would accommodate your craving, before looking at an aftermarket wheel. Just my 2 pennies though.
 
I'm actually thinking of seeing if one of the companies will make a spacer set with just the 6 bolt holes (or worse case I'll have them machined), and sending a stock lug stud to ARP to see if they have a longer high strength version that will work. I would feel far more comfortable with that set up than the adapter style spacer.
 
Method does make some impressive wheels. I have a few buddies who wheel with them. The standard looks real clean and understated.

I went with the FJ rims, but I wish they had a wider stance.
 
I would recommend wheel spacer/adapters. I put new wheels on mine and still had to add spacers to get the stance I wanted. The tires actually hit the A frame.

I would still go with spacers even if you get new wheel. At least 1" ones.

why? just buy wheels with the correct offset and back spacing.
