Recommendation for iphone mount

Agreed. I tried some other cheap mounts, but ended up back with a RAM x mount for my new to me 2014 Trail.

Removal of the radio trim wasn't too bad. The 1" ball diamond mount was screwed to the trim. I used a short connector to put the X Mount just to the left of the Radio. Cost was about $42 on Amazon.

I found on here somewhere, lol.

Long story short, remove both of the trim pieces on either side of the outside climate control knobs (the tall thing ones). They pull outwards. I didn't have to pry on anything with a tool, just got a good grip and pulled back.

Next, the climate controls pulled directly out.

Remove the 4 10mm bolts holding the radio in (silver bolts seen under the radio).

Pull the entire radio assembly directly out.

I was going to use a nut and bolt setup to hold the diamond on, but ended up using black self tapping screws due to space constraints on the back side of the trim piece.

I will be getting an air-vent mounted one soon - and my reasoning is that the AC blowing on the phone keeps it from overheating.

With my phone brightness on 100%, charging via cable, and also GPS on - the phone gets REALLY hot, killing battery longevity. With the air vent blowing frigid air onto it it should prevent thermal damage.

That's my reasoning, at least - haven't done a real-life test or anything.

And in the winter the heater blowing on it can help it overheat faster...

Had a Steelie mount in my last truck, but I really like how this mount is quite similar but without having to have a magnet on the phone itself.

Anyone had an issue with the adhesive damaging the trim around the radio bezel? Or is that gloss black finish pretty durable? Mounting spots in the 4Runner seem to be limited so I think that is the best place to put it, but as far as I can tell, that piece of trim is actually part of the head unit and would cost a small fortune if you had to replace it. The vertical trim pieces on either side below the radio look to be only $75 to replace if you ever needed to, but I have a hard time seeing where I could mount it well.

+1 for the SCOSCHE MagicMount Pro. Small and discrete, and the magnets hold well. I didnt want to drill up the plastic, or block the airvents, so this seems like the best option. Only thing is the cable management when driving and charging.. I still have to figure that out..

Update with the Scosche MagicMount; to be honest, I've haven't been fully satisfied with it. There is a lack of articulation with it due to the lack of space, and sometimes I feel the magnet is not strong enough and find my phone slipping (maybe because the case I have around it).

So... I added a Ram Mount Tough Track on the center console. It's a damn bulky like most of Ram's stuff, but very sturdy. The plastic on top of the vents is pretty thin, so you do get a little vibration while driving, however the X-grip holds the phone very securely. I like the track mount because it opens lot of options for other attachments, and you can add in more ball mounts and arms.

I have the 6" double socket and its plenty long, tho a 3" one would probably suffice.

Originally I installed my Ram Mount inside the little storage compartment under the radio. I didn’t like it because it was in the way of the cup holder.

I moved the mounting ball between the 4wd knob and my shifter. It’s perfect now. I use my cup holder more than my 4wd knob, so it was a no brainer.

The Ram Mount is very solid. My only complaint is that I can’t easily place or remove the phone from the mount with one hand.

For the people that drilled into their trim for the ram mount, how have they been holding up to bumps and offloading? Any signs of cracking in the trim? I bought both the diamond base ball and the single post ball and can't decide which one to use. I'd like to only drill one hole but think the diamond may distribute the forces better?

In my other car I have ProClip base + Panavise holder. You can see how it looks like on attached pictures. I really like that setup and I would happily do similar on 4Runner. Except ProClip base for 4Runner is a bit lower and I think it covers the air vents even more.

Do you know if I could use RAM Mount base (the ball) and attach Panavise holder on top? I like RAM Mount base but I don't like the big X holder. Granted, I never used one, but again, I really like the Panavise holder. It fits variety of phones with or without cases and it allows fully easy one hand operation. Also, it grips the phone very well.
