recommendations on where to buy acatalytic converter online

got the p0420 my mechanic said my converter is shot so i need a new one..

should i go universal or direct fit?

Before you change the converter, have you replaced the rear O2 sensor?

no i have not.. i replaced the one in front of the converter about 3 yrs ago

how can you test a sensor to see if its bad?

You can test it but I would definitely change the sensor before buying a cat.

I just had the same code on mine (2000 with CA emissions) and replacing the sensor fixed it. The sensor is about $50, compared to hundreds for the converter, and probably needs to be replaced anyway, so it's worth trying. A lot of places misdiagnose this code as a converter problem when it's just a failed sensor. Toyota used to recommend replacing them every 100k miles because they just don't last.

It's from the Factory Service Manual, there's links in the sticky threads on where to download them from. Absolutely necessary for any kind of major repairs but also nice for these small things.

No, if the cats already bad you can't hurt it again. The rear sensor does nothing to affect performance so it can't hurt your cat if it's still good.
