I'd rather run a used A340F than a rebuilt. They'll run about $300 on your local Craigslist, and can be swapped in/out in about 1-2 days, depending on your skill level.

If you know someone a LKQ you ight find a used one for around 1000.00 but you will get a part amd labor warranty. The warranty might run you an extra 300 maybe. A full good rebuild is around 3-4 grand. I just went down this road in 01. Good luck

How hard

How hard is it to rebuild your own transmission? The manual on my Porsche has detailed instructions on how to DIY and it's not hard. Just time consuming. Just curious. Seems odd to get a used one or want to toss your old one out of hand.

I would avoid lkq if that is what they charge. 300-600 used for the trans a340f and get the same year and match 4x4 or 2wd. Ask a local yard, avoid rebuilts, used oem. And only oem parts if you want to keep your truck on the road.

You should price them if they are rebuilt with all Toyota parts. That s not a bad price for a used Toyota Transmission with a parts and labor warranty.

The big problem with this idea is IF you can find one. I have been watching CL for Texas and am yet to find an 2001 automatic 4x4 transmission come up. At least when they do come up they are usually gone within a day.

You could also look into a 2wd transmission as well.

The A340E (2wd) and the A340F (4wd) are the same thing; just needs the 4wd output shaft, filter, and pan swapped over.

If you're willing/capable of this, your options increase drastically.

I see plenty of used trannies pop up all the time in the Houston area.
Craigslist search 4runner, Tacomas, T100s, even Tundras.

Only place I would trust is toyota. They will do one for about $2500 with core. Used oem is best since these autos last so long.
