Recommended brand of J hook for kayaks?

Hello everyone,

I've recently got two kayaks from a friend and have been researching hauling them on top on my 4runner. Seems the J hooks are popular here for the price, yet i dont see any recent posts about brand or style that works well. does anyone recommend one well with stock rack? ive searched amazon are they are a lot of options, a little overwhelming.

I believe my parents have the Malone foldable ones and they have held up well.

We have an 80" tall garage door opening, and these fit in there on top of my Dad's Jeep. No cross rails on the 5th gen, but would be fine on the 3rd gen.

i got the non foldable ones, very cheap ( bought 2 pairs for $60) on amazon.
but the foldable ones are Definitely worth the money

I was looking at them today at REI. Last year I just layed the kayak hull side up and ran cargo straps over the hull and around the cross bars. I wanted a better way of doing it, plus have the ability to haul a second one.

I liked the Yakama Jaylow racks the best, although I'm also just looking at ideas for a simple design made from wood. I have plenty of hard maple left over from some tables that I built, it would be cool to have a butcher block style kayak rack.

I have 2 pairs of Thule fixed (non-folding) that are very good. I used them on Thule cross bars but I think they would fit the factory cross rails well. We sold the kayaks a few years back but kept the racks as they are so well made.

I have 2 pairs from amazon that don’t fold. They were super cheap, like $45. No issues so far using them for about a year.
