Red Cone

Well if anyone wants to come with me I would be glad to have you wheel with me! I will go, and if that section is too sketch, I will go back. I will try to remove the running boards... Anyone got any tips???
 
Well I went up there and did not have the running boards off (did not have right tool). I got to that section in question and could have made it over it without getting stuck and perhaps without even scraping bottom at all. I just would have to go FAR to the left and then go over it diagonally... but my dad was with me and wanted to bail (he was not convinced that there wouldn't be more sections like this, and there may have been). So we backed about 100 feet to a turn around and headed down. Much tougher to go down than up! Fortunately there were no others coming up at the time. I guess I'll have to wait until later to fully run this amazing trail.
 
A smart wheeler is one that knows when to turn around, even if it's just to keep dad happy. I haven't been there yet this year so I'll let you know when I plan to and you can give it another run.
 
Good call, really the left side is not the route. You will get pushed back to the center and then your diff will get stuck on the center boulder.

You made the right call. The rest of the trail is easy enough but often trails like this have a gate keeper. If you click on my smug mug site you will see what was ahead for you.

I will try to get the you tube loaded of my last time up.

Pull your side steps off when you get around to it, you runner will instantly look better.

Now that I think about it, there is a small feature before the bigger one. Maybe you were on the smaller feature, which yes you would have made but the tougher feature was probably just a head.

You should consider joining a local 4x4 club, so that you do not have to go on these trips solo..which is not recommended.

I gotta convince my dad to get those things off! He wants them on even though he never uses them. But ya you are right. I am at CSU right now... so I was home for labor day and that is the reason we went wheeling. So this is probably it until next summer! Very depressing... but next summer I will surely do Red Cone in its entirety. I guess the reason we felt hesitant about doing that part is... well... we figured out how to do it so the front left wheel could go over it and then the back left wheel would also go over it... just farther to the left. I was afraid that the back wheel would slide down the left slope of the rock and it would come down hard on the axle... which would have been bad. So that is why we bailed. We saw a lifted hummer (LAME) go over it smashing up the undercarriage like I had never heard before, and the driver did not care at all! He was completely un-phased by the damage he probably just inflicted upon his car, but off road damage to a hummer makes me slightly giddy inside...

Our meetings are the first Wednesday of every month. 7:30pm at Stevenson Toyota West. If you and your Dad are intested in doing more and getting to know some nice folks to get out on the trail with, Rising Sun is a great club.

Good luck with school and next time maybe we can coordinate a run, to get you through it.
Maybe the hummer had skid plates? I have them, and even though I hate the sound, they work.
