Red Cone

Stock 4th Gen 06 Limited (well, with off road tires) and red cone trial. Is it okay? I have done Lake Como Road, Engineer Pass, Mosquito Pass, and Handcart Gulch in this truck just FYI. Thanks!

The last time I ran Red Cone was in 1999. I was in a full size 2 door Tahoe. I ended up ripping a front lower control arm mount on the switch backs going up. Hairy going down :banana: From the trip reports I've seen this year, it's gotten rougher going up and Webster has a white knuckle pucker factor in one spot. Check out colorado4x4.org in the trip reports. I have a built TJ and I won't run it because of the lack of maintenance.

To answer your question from the other thread, Red Cone seemed a bit rougher than the Ouray side of Engineer but in the same general category. That was a few years ago.

Red Cone should be very doable for you with experience (which you have) and if you take your time.
 
Well, then I shall do it! And I hope it is not too much rougher than the Ouray side of Engineer, because there were some tough sections like rocky ledges where we could not get traction and things of that nature. But we did manage to do the whole thing without tapping the skid plate once!
 
Is redcone the trail you see as you approach the top of webster pass? I just did webster and georgia pass this past weekend. The white knuckle part was def interesting.
 
Ya. I did Handcart Gulch up the switchbacks on the south side of Webster. I went up a little ways through an UNBELIEVABLY narrow section - the kind of section that makes off roading NOT fun, and stopped at the last switchback before the top. There was a washout area farther up so it was a good thing that I stopped!
 
I have done Red Cone twice this season.

There is a pretty tough right turn about 10-15 minutes up after the right turn when the trail really starts.

You will get high centered, guranteed..but it is makeable, you have to favor the right side, almost kissing the aspens, use your 4wheel low and center diff, keep you foot off the brake so that your Atrac will work properly and use careful steady pressure on the skinny pedal...

Also once out of the trees and just after the large saddle, you have that option to go right or take the short left that is more difficult.

Don't do the more difficult, you will high center for sure there and get stuck.

Other than that is it super fun!

Wait, by high centered, do you mean like the truck is being held up by the undercarriage with the wheels dangling in the air? What do you mean by high centered? Like bottoming out?

Common misconception... High centering is often referred to as bottoming out. Bottoming out is actually when you hit hard and your suspension fully compresses or "bottoms out".

Yes, high centering is what you're describing though.

Well my experience is that we use "high Centered" as you are stuck and need help or can self recover from being stuck

"Touching down" refers to just that touching down on any part of the vehicle.

Unless the section I mentioned has been reworked in the last few weeks by the 4x4 club that helps maintain that trail, then it will be there and if you are stock and not experienced with off camber features, you will get stuck.

I made it through without any issues but I have been through a few features now and then and my runner is lifted.

I would suggest go with someone with experience and bring some straps.

Don't change the feature in any way by moving large boulders, that is generally considered not bueno, as the feature is the reason folks want to wheel. Small rock stacking to help you with your stuck situation is usually ok.

Your going to touch down on occasion as you try new trails that climb in rating. That is all part of it.

This trail has become a bit more rutted out then years past in the beginning area I am mentioning. There is no go around at this section, you are really encouraged to stay on trail anyway, even though their maybe a person on an ATV or motorcycle passing you off trail..which this is highly discouraged...

Do you still have your side steps on your 4runner? You may dent those and those are mounted to the body...not the frame.. so if you really dent them you might dent your body..

A stock jeep could do it, as they are set up a bit better for medium trails like this but a stock 4runner with side steps will incur some damage..Just not the same set up.. You gotta do some lifting and get sliders to get your 4runner prepped for trails like this. Then you can really enjoy what Toyotas can do off road.

If you really want to do it, I would reccomend taking someone with more experience and pull the side steps off. I have scene side steps get munched on this trail more then once.

It is a fun trail but some precaution will make your drive home much more enjoyable..
 
Shoot. Well good thing you posted. IF I go stock, and am unbelievably careful, do you think I can do it without damage? It's just this one section right? FYI I have done lake como road up to Jaws 1 in my stock runner. And post pics and videos of the area in question! And tomorrow was the day I would try it if anyone wants to come!!
 
I think even if you are careful you will touch down and most likely get stuck. I have seen other lift rigs get hung up there.

If you really want to go, I would pull the steps off, really easy to remove and then you can re-install when you get home.
