Red-Runner getting built

Glad you didn't sell it, I'd love to see this thing in person when you move to NorCal. We'll find some trails and get it out to stretch it's legs.

BTW, I do like the dark red or inferno color. If I could repaint it would be the inferno.

This thread is pure eye candy! It's just awesome man. I love what you've done so far and am working on a very similar build plan for when I have my 4runner.

I had a couple of quick questions if you don't mind me asking. How well do the corbeau seats do as far as damping some of the shock during the rides offroad? My wife has a very bad back and I'm looking into suspension seats to try and give her more comfort. Are you using the stock belts with them or a harness of some sort?

I'm not familiar with the area you're wheeling in as I haven't gotten to see very much of CA since moving here. I see you mention sand in a lot of your posts and that your Grabbers do very well with it. I'll be doing a lot of rocky/mountainous terrain, do you think they would do well for that? I've been eyeing BFG T/A KO's but they are pretty pricey.

Great build thread man, very fun to read!

Thanks. Sorry it's taken so long to respond. Been busy with life, but things are all good now. Ready to make some more moves on the truck.

Stock belts...no bar to attach harness...yet.

The seats are a massive improvement. My wife and I both have old-people issues like cranky hips and backs, and the seats are the least fatiguing I've experienced.

Thanks again. I think those tires are good all-rounders. May not be optimal in all conditions, but I've also been impressed with their ability to hold up with low pressure. We run around 17lbs or so whenever we wheel, and I haven't had any problems. Did some slick rocks a couple weeks back with no real trouble. That said, I'm gonna try different tires soon, just to switch things up a bit.

Good luck with your build, and my apologies for going dark for so long.

I'm trying to figure out what new seats to get. I really like the baja xrs, but I know most suspension seats sit higher. My head almost touches the ceiling as is. What are your observations with the seat height?

Just read through your build start to finish and was excited to see what I would find on each page! You keep things exciting, tasteful and well done. Looking forward to what lies ahead...

It's been a long time since I've updated this. I still have and love and spend too much money on my 4Runner...so at least I've got that going for me.

The dreaded time has come to smog the beast, so we did some surgery, and smogged clean. The only problem now is that I've got a check engine light for a lean code. Logged data with the wideband and I'm not running lean at all. Going to replace O2 sensor, and hope that fixes the issue.

Got new paint last week, so she's sitting pretty right now. Just a Sheib three coat refresh of stock color, but she looks new from a distance. Trail vehicles aren't show vehicles....right?!

Big front end upgrade happening next week, but we'll talk about that after it's done. Hint: boxed spindles and lower uniball conversion may be involved. We will be at TDS with the truck and the new mods should be in place by then...and hopefully no more CEL...

paint job looking real good bro

have you considered a black metal/steel roof rack?

I had a cheapo roof rack on top for a while, but I'm liking the cleaner look. I need to get something low profile and cleaner than the old one. They do mess with the Ham antenna also... Dunno what I'm gonna do up top. Suggestions?

Front End upgrades

This week we finally got the Solo Motorsports boxed spindles with uniball lower replacement, and heimed steering upgrade. I've been waiting months for this, and the day finally came.

About Solo Motorsports spindles:

1996-2004 TACOMA / 1996-2002 4RUNNER ? Solo Motorsports

The spindles are fully boxed and weigh a TON. I believe they may be the strongest point on my rig now. They do require a uniball upper control arm. Toyota Fully Fabricated Spindles ? Solo Motorsports

They can be made to accommodate the steering upgrade, which I thought wouldn't be a bad idea. The steering is a 7/8" aluminum heimed monster of an outer link. It also appears to be nearly indestructible. Toyota 1? Lower Uniball & 7/8? Heim Steering Upgrade ? Solo Motorsports

You do have to give up ABS though, since they are not engineered with a port for the ABS sensor...maybe something they could do if you ask, but I did not.

IMPORTANT - if you do this upgrade, you need to know that they are not engineered by default to fit the Tundra brake upgrade, but they can be modified to fit with a little bit of grinding to accommodate the thicker Tundra rotor. We found this out the hard way, and were concerned something was very wrong with the install. We were pretty freaked out, but that's when Solo came to the rescue.

Bobby, the owner of Solo, sent a truck to San Diego, picked up my rig, and hauled it on a flatbed up to their shop in Covina. Once there, they diagnosed the issue (Tundra rotors interfering with the uniball upgrade), tore it down, machined the part, turned my rotors, buttoned it back up, and returned the truck to San Diego in one piece. THAT'S CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!

Moral of the story - make sure Solo knows ALL of the upgrades on your rig before ordering or attempting an install.

The ride is awesome - you can feel the weight a bit, but the steering is much more direct and any slop that was present before the upgrades is completely gone. Very happy with the current situation.

...now I need to track down this damn CEL that's persisted since smogging the truck. P0171 Lean code. I've replaced the O2 sensor, all vacuum lines, fuel filter, seafoamed, reviewed and rewired the 7th Injector, and cleaned (and finally replaced) the MAF. No luck. Code just won't leave me alone, but the truck seems to be running perfectly. My wideband does not seem to indicate any lean condition -- except maybe at idle... I still suspect the MAF, but that's probably irrational. I'll call URD for some help tomorrow.

...and the last mechanical upgrade before the desert season begins. Finally got an exhaust installed. I went with a Wicked Flow

went through your build, and I gotta say well done.

do you have any drone with this exhaust? and what model did you go with?

Ive been considering an aftermarket muffler but most/all of them have a drone at highway speeds
