I started my Toyota adventures a few years ago when I picked up an 86 regular cab pickup for $800. The only thing not dented, rusted or broken on it was the steering wheel. I dumped a ton of money and time into it, trying to make the awesome flatbed rock crawler I had in my head come to life. Then a friend of mine bought an 87 SR5 4Runner and asked if I wanted to trade. So I became the proud owner of a first gen 4Runner. I dumped a ton of time and money into this one also, trying to make it a good daily driver/weekend warrior rig. I needed something to drive to keep fuel costs down so I knew I couldn't turn it into a dedicated crawler.
The reason I needed a new daily driver/beater (the Powerstroke, not the fire truck lol):
The 87:
Fast forward a couple years to 3 weeks ago. I stumbled on a classified ad for a 96 SR5. I had been thinking about buying a newer Tacoma, but when I saw this 3rd gen runner I knew I had to have it.
The day I brought it home:
Specs:
96 SR5, 194,000 miles, 5 speed, 3.4 V6, leather, sunroof, Sonoran Steel Lift, 2" body lift, LC Engineering clutch, flywheel and short throw shift kit, Addicted Offroad front tube bumper, Smittybilt XRC8 winch, 16" KMC Enduros with 285/75/16 Mickey Thompson MT's
It is in really good shape with the exception of a dent in the drivers side front fender and the front seats. I sold my 87 about a week after I brought the new one home and directed my full attention to the 96.
The first critical project was mounting my fire department tag to the front bumper and giving everything a good cleaning.
