New here and do not know much about cars. Have a 2008 4runner with 40,000 miles. I seemed to have been averaging right around 20.5 miles per gallon until these last 2 fill ups. Now i am getting 17-17.5, any suggestions on what the problem could be. Im not to worried as I used to have a mustang gt before i bought this, just wondering why the significant reduction

I used to get approx. 18-19 mpg on my V6, now i'm getting 15mpg. I've tried cleaning throttle body, seafoam, upping tire pressure, checked spark plugs, oil changes every 5000KM. I don't know whats wrong. makes me want to trade in my suv every time i fill it up.

Same issue myself as well as a lot of other folks on here are having. I've also gone through pretty much the same troubleshooting items as you but feel as if it'll take a miracle to find out what's wrong esp with no CEL. I've ruled out the winter gas as a problem b/c it's been over a year since I've noticed the issue. as for the 265/70... might contribute to a slightly worse MPG but shouldn't be as drastic as my 320 mile for a full tank range (on the display). I remember when the display used to show over 400 miles for a full tank.
I know driving habits can greatly affect mileage but I don't race to the red light anymore and generally cruise at 60mph on the highway.
I know a mechanic who recently purchased an 08 v6 (certified used from a toyota dealership) and although he doesn't know it has the same issue. How do I know? He started up his truck and his range display showed 215 miles to go at 3/4 tank, about the same as what I get. He even plugged in an OBD2 scanner into my truck and showed me that there's nothing wrong, as much as I like technology sometimes a gut feeling supersedes all.
Someone mentioned in another thread that it might be a problem with O2 sensors/ engine running rich/lean or something to that effect. Still waiting on confirmation from the OP as I believe he mentioned he may be changing all or some of the O2 sensors out.
For some reason I'm thinking the problem may be in the gas/ethanol mix but can't find pure gas anywhere around me to prove/disprove this theory. Maybe someone else with access to ethanol free gas can test it out?
I love my truck and drive it a lot less nowadays for this sole reason and definitely do want to find the cause for this and fix it. I seriously thought that by buying a toyota I thought it'd be the last auto I'd ever need!

I'm in the same boat; also in StL. '08 V6 SE 2D; used to get 400+ on a tank, now registers 315 after a fill up. Sucks (g)ass. I've got 37k on it and it started going down noticably around 30k. I bought it new in Dallas and just recently moved up to StL. New plugs, cleaned mass air sensor, new air filter, 38lbs in the tires, reset ECU several times. Can't get the numbers up. Admittedly I drive short distances, side streets; very little highway. When I have gotten her out on the open road; I reset the computer, go 60mph and barely muster 20mpg on the computer or 17 and change manually calc'd. I didn't buy the vehicle for fuel economy; but it's sad for this to be called 'normal' which is what it has become. I'm out of things to try as well. I'll keep checking back for suggestions.

When mine was stock it used to show 405ish on the range display, and after letting the range display hit 0 for about 5 miles, and then filling up it went back to 425. Now that I have a lift and bigger tires, my range display would show around 385 in the summer, but now I think it's showing about 365 after a fill up. I'll have to double check if that 365 is accurate since I have noticed quite a drop recently on the display after a fill up. I have 62K miles on mine. My mileage stayed pretty much the same after I did the 60K maintenance (diff/transfer case fluids, oil, spark plugs, air filter, MAF). Only recently has it started to really drop now that it's December. One thing I haven't tried lately is resetting the ECU by pulling the two fuses (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/65934-getting-chittay-gas-mileage-help.html#post557334).
