Reduction in Brake Dust

I now have over 2,300 miles on my new '06 Limited. These brakes seem to produce a lot less dust than any other car I've owned. With my previous vehicle (2001 Mazda Tribute), I had to clean the front wheels every 3-5 days just to keep them looking as clean as the rear wheels. (Front were disc, rear were drum on the Tribute).

The disc brakes on the 4Runner work great, and I really love how the wheels stay clean. Anyone know why the wheels collect less dust? Is it the pads, or the aerodynamics of the wheels?

The 4Runner is hands down better. My last car was a 04 Ford Escape, disk/drum and the front wheels were almost impossible to keep clean, just like on your Tribute.

I totally agree...of course, it doesn't hurt that the 'Runner's wheels have a fairly straightforward design that's easy to run a rag around...

I wonder if the coating on the rims makes it harder for the dust to adhere to them?

Either way, I agree they are easier to clean that a lot of other wheels, and they sure don't need to be cleaned as often.

Has anyone tried American Racing Wheel Wax? I have used some on a German vehicle. When cleaning the wheels just use the car soap to clean them off. If you start out clean and coat the wheel presumeably you won't need wheel cleaner as often which will probably remove the wax. I can't tell yet whether it sheds the dirt and brake dust better or not. Maybe others can post their experience of this product.

It's not the wheels, it's the brake pads. Funny thing how the first two people in this post are former Tribute and Escape owners. Those sister vehicles were known for their notorious brake dust on the front wheels!!! A friend of mine also had an Escape and he swapped out the factory pads for a set of Raybestos pads and never had a brake dust problem again.

We are fortunate that Toyota equipped the 4Runner with pads that are not very messy in terms of brake dust.

Dust

Two other product that may shed brake dust/dirt well is Klasse All In One and Menzerna Full Molecular Jacket. I use the FMJ on my 06 Sport and hear it works well on the the wheels also. I'm going to experiment between these and the Wheel Wax. They are both polymer sealers and last longer than wax.

Brake dust

Both the Klasse and FMJ are liquids. Have used the Klasse as a mild cleaner after claying and then FMJ two coats. So far here at 8700 ft. in CO the FMJ seems to holding up well on the paint. Will take a while to experiment on wheels as I have Wheel Wax on. They use magnesium chloride on the roads here so we're always looking for the holy grail of protection.

Ceramic brake pads produce little dust and I had Akebono ceramics on my '99 and it would take almost two months before the buildup bothered me but I went cheaper this time and while the braking is still good the pads are still producing bad brake dust over just a few weeks.

I've been quite impressed. A whole week and the wheel still looks pretty clean. A weeks worth of braking is still less dust than my previous 530i, which was worse after a night of driving around.

The 4r produce MUCH less brake dust than my previous Titan and my wife Benz. My wife's Benz is the worst. I never see any car produce that many dust as the Benz. I can't wait for it to wear out so I can replace with after the aftermaket one.

Companies use different brake pads and has nothing to do with the vehicle itself;you want less brake dust just research some pads. Ceramics produce very little brake dust.

OE pads on the 4th Gens are Ceramics.
I switched to Axxis Ultimates when I redid my brakes and lines and now I need to wipe my front wheels every 2-3 days or the wheels look terrible.
Great stopping now, I'd say better than the OE but Im gettting real tired of cleaning em every few days......
Any suggestions for goods clean / good stopping pads?
