When from stock 31" on the 2016 trail to 315/70/17, do I need to regear?

What'd you have in mind? Granted i'm only running 33s, but with about 650 lbs of armor the brakes are still beastly if you press hard enough

Good looking rig! I would only re-gear if you need to for low speed off-roading. 4.56 really helps on easing over obstacles, and when going down steeps. it makes low 1 a great crawling gear.

You don't need to but personally I think it fixed all the shift points. It doesn't hunt around at high speeds anymore, in the mtns it's much improved and off road it has a real low gear now. I feel like it improved control all around.

I think I'll do some more driving especially off road to see how it is. Pretty pricey to regear

Off-road is where you will really like the regear. You will have to two foot it pretty hard in the rocks with 35s on stock gears. The 4.88 is where I'd recommend with 35s but I believe my 305 MTR aren't much smaller than yours and 4.56 is perfect. I've been off-road with them once or twice.

Those sure don't look like 315s. Are you sure. they look like 33s to me. Maybe the camera and the flares are playing tricks on my eyes. Do you have a bracket lift or something? Also, go measure, many tires are way off compared to what the advertised numbers on the side say, but I've never seen 315s actuallky measure under 34", but it is possible. If it is a BFG, it could be under 34" and still be labeled a 315.
If they are really 34-35" tires. re-gear will help a bunch. 4.56 is about right. True 35s would be good with 4.88

For Tacoma's everyone recommends regearing with that size. Not just for offroading, but for highway power and mpg as well. Not sure the stock gearing on a 4runner, so I am just throwing it out there.
As for brakes, do you have any plan for that? Are there better pads that will do the trick, or will you need to update the whole system?

Im running 33" duratracs and I went ahead and jumped straight to 4.88 gears and boy am I glad I did! After driving with 4.88s I dont see any reason to spend the money for 4.56 either go all the way or dont do it.
It shifts so much better, it doesn't feel over geared at all, it feels like it should from the factory. I am getting about 16mpg on the highway and around town which is as good as its always gotten with all the heavy gear and tires on it.

yep the first 500 miles breaking in the gears I was only getting 14.5mpg but once they broke in I get 16mpg now. You could feel how tight things were the first couple weeks.
I used the recommended LUCAS NON synthetic gear oil for 500 miles then drained it and refilled with the same LUCAS oil
