Register the V6 as a TRUCK VS. PASSENGER in TX? (How much does it actually weigh)

Something interesting in TX:I can register the 4R as a truck if I want to. Apparently, and I don't have the full details until I go in, if it comes out cheaper to register the vehicle by LBS than regular registration you are warranted that option. (although I think the rules change Sept 1)

So I need to find out exactly what weight I use for the calculations:

Beside the possible registraton fee savings, I would look carefully at the other pros/cons of a comercial registration. It depends on the state. Here in NY, comercial plated vehicles are not allowed on passenger parkways, which can cause difficulty in getting to some places easily. There may be some restrictions which you may not like.

I lived in TX for a while and my 1990 4runner was registered as a light truck. Go for it.


MOre on it. I didn't choose. A my 4runner was simply considered a light truck. I think they have a set determination. You do not get to pick. TX i believe considers SUV's light trucks.

Interesting... in CA, a commercial plate allows you to park in truck loading (yellow) zones. There's an additional fee associated with having commercial plates, these come default on trucks, can be requested for SUVs and minivans for business owners. However, there's no restrictions where you can't park. BUT an expired meter in the yellow zone cost much more than at a regular meter.

Turned out to be cheaper with no tax/insurance implications and I have access to certain parking spaces designated for "truck" downtown Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Corpus.

What'd you have to tell them to get it registered as a truck? I'm not trying to scam anyone, I'd just like my license plate to say "Truck" as opposed to a stupid old car I just bought my 4Runner from out of state and will be registering it here in Texas on Friday.

My concern is my 07, V6 is used as a truck (the back seat stays down with a cargo shells for light duty or heavy duty firewood vs an SUV) if differences are worthwhile. I guess the key word is commercial, which I'm not vs some volunteer handyman work (for the needy) and personal firewood. jow

I just asked the lady at the counter to check and see if it would be cheaper for me to register the 4R as a truck. She said it came out to $1.89 in savings. I said sure, I'll take the $2 and my 4r will say truck!

Its perfectly legal.

It has nothing to do with how you use it. Its all about the weight and size of the vehicle. You can only use it for pizza delivery, the state of TX doesn't care. When you register just ask... also see above I found some algorithms from other websites on how they calculate.

Its only going to save you 1-5$ (depending on county) but it will say TRUCK! (if that matters to you). And you get to use the VIP truck parking downtown.
