Regular Headlight Bulbs

I've searched and searched, and while I would like HIDs, I have a few other things I'd like to do first. That being said, I'd like to replace my OEM halogens with a better halogen with a whiter light for visibility reasons.

Has anyone used a specific halogen bulb like a philips or silverstar or anything that they liked? Seems like every thread is for either HID or LED headlights...

Just looking for a temporary (mini) upgrade to lighting.

Speaking of lighting upgrade, was notified of my interior LED bulb upgrade package was delivered, but realized when I got home that it was stolen off of my porch...

I hadv Phillips but took it out after driving in front my wife wife and seeing out blinding it was.

Sorry to hear the bulbs were stolen off the porch! You should be able to get another set sent out, as long as the shipper allowed them to be delivered without signature.

As for bulbs, I really like the Silverstar ultras! Have been using them for quite a long time in several vehicles, and they definitely are brighter than standard halogens. The only other bulb I run is a Hella 55/100w bulb in my 87 truck, but its an H4 bulb in an H4 housing which is all glass. Those bulbs get REALLY hot on high beam and I wouldn't even think about putting them in the plastic housings of the 4 runner!

Be careful of any bulbs stating higher wattage and/or higher lumens, a stock 55w halogen bulb is generally around 1100-1200 lumens, but you can find 80w bulbs with almost 1800 lumens, these are the ones that could melt your housing!

Just recently did this to mine. Insane results for a minimal price. I did both my headlights and fogs. Think it was right around $32 for all 4 with the Amazon link in the thread.

Are y'all saying you switched to HID's in the OEM projectors, or y'all did the full retro for your new HID kit? I had HID in my previous vehicle and loved them. If OEM projector housings aren't taboo then I'll go the HID route most likely in 4300K

We both did a PnP. Check his build. I have Xenon Depot's Phillips 4300K kit. I love it. You'll catch crap on here about it, but If you adjust your headlights down a smidge you'll be fine. I've never had any issues, and I've driven behind my HID hating friend multiple times without him commenting on them (he mentions my other buddy's 4th gen all the time).

Honestly, I want to do a full retro, but I'm waiting till I (a.) have more funds, and (b.) someone else takes the plunge and does a write up on '14+ model year lights. There's been a few that have had retrofits done, but one was professional, and the other posted pictures and just jumped ship.

I have mine adjusted down just a little, and never get flashed.

And yes, I hate the HID's in a regular halogen reflector just as much as anyone else, but in the OEM Halogen Projector you will not get the same effects as what you see in "open" reflectors with HID bulbs...

Due your research and make your decisions as to which one serves you best!

Use an Osram H9 bulb to replace H11 low beam

will make a big difference

Don't bother dremelling the tab inside the connector on the bottom of the H9 bulb. Buy a set of harness adapters so the H9 is plug and play.See H8 or H11 to H9

On both HIR 1 and H9 bulbs you'll have to bend the metal tabs slightly, or cut the tab if it is plastic, so they will fit into the headlight assembly. See the link posted above.

I got some cheap HIDs kit that are highly rated on amazon a few weeks ago. While it was whiter light, it was only slightly brighter and I have not been impressed overall -while not apples to apples I was expecting the light to be much brighter and somewhat comparable to what I have in my MB Eclass that came with LED headlamps that are noticeably brighter. I am returning the HIDs to Amazon and was thinking to get a kit from TRS but was wondering what I should expect with those.

Absolutely, yes!
BTW, I have 50W ballast.

TRS and XenonDepot have quality stuff.

Interesting your comment about the 50W ballast. Having read through some posts on HID, I always thought the 35W (which I got now and was also thinking of getting from TRS) would be sufficient and with the higher rated ones, there were risks of melting the housing or other components?

You can't go wrong with either. They are very comparable and very bright, with clean/crisp color.

I have the Xenon Depot kit with the Phillips 4300K bulbs.

TRS tested these in 2014 T4R OEM housings with no issues.
I asked before I purchased the 50W ballasts.
I have been running mine since Aug 2014 without any issues or any signs of any issues.

In the end, it's your choice.
Suggestion is to purchase quality stuff and pay for it one time!

Sylvania silverstar zXe. Size H11 works for the low beams and the fogs. White light, looks like HID, performs just as well, but way less expensive. They also burn cooler than the stock lights which cause your headlight housing to oxidize.

How long would it take to run silverstars before oxidation occurs?

ALSO, [MENTION=103267]Saker[/MENTION] when you adjust your beam, do you draw a line from 20-30 feet and after installing HID you adjust the beam to the same line from same distance?

That's probably the best route. Masking tape works well for this.
