Relocate the Backup Camera? - Aftermarket Bumper.....

Ok so before anyone goes "use the search" I can tell you I've spent a considerable amount of time searching and nothing....

So help me out.

Anyone solved that conundrum? Spare Tire out back on the swing arm obstructs the view. I am looking for ideas/links/etc about relocating that and what others have done.

Hi tomasallal,

What ever you decide to do, try to "keep it simple". The stock 'optimal' location is in the tailgate door latch.

The tailgate wiring harness is routed through the right side of the head-liner. The way that I would most likely approach this would be to leave the stock cam "where it is" and move the harness to the rear spoiler area where I would (very thoughtfully) install a new camera. You won't need to pull a longer cable because it's already there. I would be very conscientious and aware as to the precise angle of the existing stock camera's lens and mimic it's geometry to the micron.

Add the new camera to the lower side (bottom) of the spoiler; making sure that it's view of the rear bumper is not obscured. The new cam will likely come w/ some mounting hardware (especially if it's an aftermarket device); so choose your location wisely... Good luck!

If its anything like the GX470, the harness uses a 3 wire setup with a 4th wire shielding the video feed. That 4th wire still needs to be reconnected as I think it is a ground. The camera operates on 6 volts I believe.

Toyota runs the 3 wire harness until about 1 foot from the camera then they splice it off into the 4 wires to the camera.

Aftermarket camera is probably the way I'll go as well, though I don't have a factory nav system to tie into so I'll need to look for another option there.

Keep in mind that aftermarket cameras are 12volts whereas the stock camera is 6volts.
