Remote Start from Iphone

I know there is a forum strictly for audio and alarms but I haven't heard much talk about the 5th. I am a huge fan of the CompuStar product and I am installing one tomorrow with Dronemobile. I know that Viper was first to market with the ability to remote start from a phone but was wondering if anyone has any first hand experience between the 2 products?

Ok, I'm way behind... Does the vehicle need a cellphone#? Is this a wi-fi thing? How does this work? An aircard?
 
I will take plenty of pics and attempt to post as many install details as possible but its not for the novice installer. Basic installs are fairly affordable, but I highly suggest going to an Authorized Dealer for whichever product you chose. I know that most BestBuy locations offer the Viper but I dont really have all that much faith in their installs. No offense...
 
IIRC the Viper was almost twice the money last year and also there was a monthly charge

I had to draw the line with the charge, oh yea....

The app was free

With Drone, 1st year is free (so is app) but its $30/yr after that with unlimited pings. To me, that is not bad...

Not bad at all...seems to me the Viper was like 20$ a month...so that and the 600$ unit was just more than what it was worth to me.

The range was off the hook though...I think you could start it 2 miles away.

Good luck with yours, sounds like a nice unit!

The fee is where I draw the line..................especially since the same alarm can be had if you're willing to carry an extra key fob. I give it to them though, for people with money to BLOW it's an awesome feature but if you're on a budget, its not.

Maybe I misunderstood your response but the CompuStar/Dronemobile and the Viper can be started anywhere there is cell reception. It has virtually unlimited range. Completely different from fobs

What I'm saying is if you "don't" mind carrying another FOB, you can have the same exact alarm/remote start for less money from Viper. As much as it would be cool to show off to your friends that you started your vehicle with your phone, it's not worth it.

I mean who needs to start their car from 20 miles away? And maybe I'm wrong here as I haven't done all the research but you'd still need the factory FOB to drive the car away despite the Viper system remote starting it for you.
 
Good news and bad. Good...the install went well. The bad, I was only able to snap one picture before my phone died and I didnt have a charger. The product is incredible!!!!!! I forgot to mention in the OP that I do not have the Smart Key feature on my SR5. The entire purpose of me spending extra $ on this system is for when you have take a train or other transportation to your vehicle but are well beyond traditional remote range. Even at my office, a traditional remote starter will not reach to where my truck is parked. Now, I can use my Iphone or any computer connected to the internet. You can start it before leaving a sports/concert venue, train/bus station etc. To me, spending a few hundred on the starter and $30 per year (after the first year for free) and having my ride at a comfortable temp no matter where I am, is well worth it. The install is really no different than any other remote starter out there except for the additional Drone module, which connects via RS232. It only adds about 30 minutes to the install, including registering the SIM and creating an account.
 
this is the only photo I snapped. The majority of the wires are located under the steering column and the drivers kick panel. There are 4 connections for the bypass that are located on the passenger kick panel...

I would love to have that too! The range on my Avital is pretty sorry if you ask me. That monthly charge thing is a bit much by my standards. Hopefully it will go down when more people adopt it.
 
I can see someone has their phone in their pocket, the phone gets bumped and ends up accidentally starting your car. Your on vacation 1000+ miles away which your car is running in the airport parking lot.

When you get back to the car days later and try to start it, it is mysteriously out of gas:cry2:

There's an app due to come out very soon that allows owners of vehicles that have OnStar to start their vehicles with their cell phones from anywhere.
 
I followed some of the links, wow! These things have come a long way. Based on some of the advertised ranges the iPhone thing seems like a gimmick... If the range is claimed at 6000ft surely it'll work from inside a building at up to 1000ft in (I would think).

Couple of safe guards built in. First off, every remote starter I know of (including this one) have a run time. It is set at the time of installation. Most common choices are 15/30/45 mins before the engine automatically shuts down. Plus, with the app, you tap the start button, and then it says it is about to start the vehicle and you have to select yes or cancel. There is also another feature you can choose, and that is a 4 digit PIN when you first open the app. That will protect if your phone is lost or stolen, and prevent unauthorized use...

It is not a gimmick. you have traditional remotes that come with it. Depending on which package you choose, you get more or less range out of the remote. The Iphone range is virtually unlimited as the unit basically has a built in cell so as long as you are parked in an area that has coverage, and your phone has coverage, you are good!
