Remote Start Issues

Hi guys, I had a remote start put in, and had a couple questions. Maybe you guys that have put similar systems in your 4Runners had the same issues.

I have the Viper 5101 (1-way) keyless entry/remote start system. It does not have an alarm, the OEM alarm was left in tact. I bought the xpress kit PKALL for the bypassing the transponder key ignition interlock. Anyways, I love the system, love the 4 aux channels, and has a bunch of features that can be programmed. Theres some things that sort of annoy me, but I think they are 4Runner related which is why I'm asking here.

If I press the remote start button, the alarm goes off when the car starts. If I press unlock first then start, the factory alarm disarms and all is well. Clearly the Viper system has the ability to disarm the OEM alarm, so I dont think my installer missed any wires. I wasnt sure if the 4runner had some kind of weird circuitry in which the alarm cant be disarmed without the doors being unlocked as well. Its not that annoying, but I have set off the alarm a couple times now when I thought I pressed unlock but I guess not hard enough (soft buttons on the Viper dont have the same 'click' feedback that the hard buttons on the OEM remote have :( ) I would also like to be able to keep the truck locked until I get there, so far this requires 3 button presses: [unlock], [start], pause, [lock]

Any and all input is appreciated!

Sorry to jack the thread but I have sent PM's to you inquiring about your old JBL head unit and have not received an answer. Do you still have it for sale?

This is definitely doable, I've seen a newer Limited with a system on it that allowed remote start without unlocking the doors first, that did not set off the alarm. Unfortunately, I was unable to talk to the owner to see what system/relays/parts he had installed to make it work.

I've been working on adding remote start myself, all my GMs have it and it is a nice feature...but I've been talking to several installers about how to acheive what I want without running into the same problems that you're having.

One of the guys I've talked to says the issue comes with newer 4Runners, that even the OEM remote cannot unlock the doors when 1) the key is in the ignition and 2) the T4R is already started/running. Sure enough, I cannot unlock with the OEM renote when the truck is running...So we're working through it. My other issue is getting the remote rear window roll-down functionality back with an aftermarket remote and interface. We're trying to track down all the parts needed to acheive it - will update here if and when I can get it all together and installed.

There are several other issues as well that that I might as well mention:
1) Headlights dont go off with second press of [lock] when its dark and lights were left in 'auto'. Headlights still turn off after 30 seconds so no biggie.
2) If you turn the car on with remote start, then let it time out or turn it off with the remote fob, the headlights will stay on if A) you have the headlights set to auto and B) its dark. This is apparently a problem with many cars that have auto lamps, not just the 4Runner. Apparently the fix is a simple relay. Im not worrying about this issue because Ill probably always get in the car and drive it after remote starting it (and turn it off with the key).
3) The standard install of these systems taps into the horn. I personally find horn honks on lock/unlock to be annoying as hell, and really appreciate the beep instead. Im still trying to figure out which wire this is; my installer connected the unit to the horn but Ill try to switch it over.
