Remote Start Problem

Hi guys,

I have done some searching on the forum and couldn't quite find what I was looking for, so i figured it is time to post my problem.
I have an audiovox remote starter on my 99 4Runner, and it used to work fine until i got it serviced at a toyota dealership. I had the spark plugs replaced, and the timing belt replaced. Now my remote start doesnt work.

When i attempt to use it, it starts the car for about a second or two and then dies out, tries again two more times and then quits.
Any ideas of what the problem is and what I can do?

They might have gotten a wire loose, your best thing to do is take it to a stereo alarm shop to have a proper diagnostic and repair done.

Unless you are really tech savvy, I would recommend spending a few bucks having it checked out by a reliable installer. Not worth the headache IMO.

Does it exhibit the same symptom when you manually start it? if it does then it could very well be your starter contacts.

I had a similar issue... under the hood there is a trigger wire that should be connected to a tach sensing wire. Could be on the ignition coil circuit, a fuel injector circuit or some tach signal circuit. Check under the hood, you may be able to follow the wires that pass from the interior to under the hood. (There may be only 1 single wire)

a better install will have atleast 4 sets of wire going in and out the firewall, one pair for siren, one for hood pin and one for main power to the alarm brain. i would take it to a shop for a small fee for the job be done right.

Not to discredit anyone... but the response regarding 4 wires does not apply to a remote start.

A simple remote start install utilizes a tach sensor connection under the hood, as opposed to tapping in at the computer. Hood pin switches are not commonly used due to the fact that they rust and corrode, making them ineffective. A toggle switch in-line with the brake light switch is a much safer way of disabling a remote start unit.

All other wiring is done under the steering column and driver side kick panel.

The hood pin is just there for added security, if for some reason anyone open the hood while the car is arm, alarm should go off, just like the doors. I know most people dont run a main fused line in the car for the alarm brains, the installers like to tap a constant on for the main power for the alarm.
