This one claims you can retain the factory key fob as your remote start by pressing the lock button three times. Like you I don't want an additional pager or another alarm. I've never been a fan of aftermarket alarms I just want to be able to remote start the truck.

"One important note about using 'add-on' remote starts in Toyotas: The factory remote controls in your car do not work when the car is running - that's the way Toyota engineered the car. This means that if you're using a remote start that works from your OEM remotes, you'll be able to start the car just fine, but you will NOT be able to unlock the doors with the factory remote control." Since it starts by pressing the lock button you would have to put your key in the door every time you get in after remote starting it.

I had read about that before. does it then use the unlock button to kill the engine?

using the key to unlock the door wouldn't be too big of an issue though. my 85 doesn't have power/remote locks, so it would be no different than that. it would also only be first thing in the morning, and after work for the winter months. id be OK with that.

though, I was hoping for a plugNplay kit.

Unfortunately that is the case, unless you get a full system (remote start and security) you will always have to use the key to unlock the doors once the vehicle is running

Thanks for this post! Have been looking for something exactly like this.
Besides the not being able to use the buttons to unlock, meaning you will just have to use the key to unlock. Is there anything anyone here can think of that would be a downside to going with this system.

oh, I was talking about the vehicle battery. I have read far too many horror stories where either the battery drains, or the rig simply wont start, that ended up being a faulty, or improperly installed aftermarket alarm. that is a headache I want no part of.

if that is the only option, I will skip having remote start. sad though. as I have remote start on my 85, 5 speed, but there isn't a simple solution to have it on the 06.

well car battery drain, i think the newer alarms knows when to take less draw when the vehicle sits for couple of days, i remember back then with the alarm is on, and if the vehicle was not driven for a week, you come back to a dead battery, it also depends on what else is installed, more accessories that are added, like glass senor, tilt sensor and proximity sensor, more it will draw, but now the stuff draws very little power. for the 4th gen, for remote start, you still need a key bypass, a brain, and for the alarm remote start version, it just some additional wires to be used, you can start off with the entry level stuff, but when you decide you want more things added, you might hate yourself for not going all out. tilt and glass senors can be added later, most alarms will come with a shock sensor.

DEI was the only way to go when I installed remote starts a little over 10 years ago. I can't imagine much has changed. I still buy DEI products myself with every new vehicle purchase.

Actually... The newer alarms draw 10x the power of the older alarm systems at idle. One key reason for this is the blue LED. Powering a blue LED requires a huge amount of current in comparison to the old red LEDs which are both not as bright and not as cool. Even though its only like 10ma vs 1ma, if you add that up for 24 hours a day and leave the car undriven for a few weeks it will definitely kill your battery. Now I just take the battery out of the car and take out the fuel pump fuse when I don't drive it for a month. Better than any alarm system IMO.

I just had a Viper 2 way remote start only system installed a month ago. Works fine. Has enough range for me.

I have the compustar system with no alarm. I had best buy install it and it came with a warranty but I haven't had to use it. Range is good. Wasn't a big fan of getting different fobs at first but the loop that holds it on my key ring for the original fobs has since broken on both so it was a blessing. I lost the piezzo beep and the roll down of the back window but I didn't use the back window feature anyway. It sure has come in handy especially the last couple of days when it was -20 degrees outside.

I never used that back window feature from the remote either. I occasionally do roll down the back window to load or grab something though.

So I take it you escaped from Craig, CO? It's been really cold there lately.

what ever brand you choose, just make sure its properly installed, also on the led light, you can use what ever color, doesnt have to be blue, doesnt have to be single, if you are savy enough, the led output can do 2 leds at most.
i might change my leds out to white later on.
leds at the bottom corner are wired to the led output of the alarm brain.
the scanning part is wired to my ground output.

Question - did yours come with a flashing blue LED that was mounted behind the rear view mirror? I just discovered that by accident. Has a button on it, but I can't figure out what it does. I wish this thing came with a manual.

depending on the model, could be the valet switch.
