Remote Start?

Does anybody know of any remote start setups that work with the stock security system? I really like the 4Runner security system and the key fobs, so I dont want to replace the whole thing with an aftermarket system.

I saw something online a long time ago that was pretty universal. You basically hit 'lock' 3 times in a row and that triggered the remote start unit. I imagine remote start would be easy with the 4Runner due to the "one touch" ignition. On my last truck you had to tap into the tachometer guage wire and train the system what RPMs were still engine cranking and what RPMs indicated the engine started - big hassle.

Anybody know any products? Hopin to get this installed by snowboardin season!

I have a compustar unit. It does not work with the factory remote, but it arms and disarms the factory system. Plus the aftermarket alarm is about 10x better. I don't carry both fobs, I just keep the starter one with my when I got to work in the winter and use the regular one when I am out driving around town.

i would highly recommend u look into the aftermarket systems with separate alarms/key fobs. i just had an audiovox system installed with a 2-way radio so i know if the car started, the inside temp of the car, current run time, etc. it's amazing! also, the security system is much more sensitive and if it's activated and i'm within 1/4 mile of the car, it tells me. it even chirps a few times if anyone pulls at any one of the door handles. very cool stuff...

Yeah, I had a 2-way system on my last car, never really used it much. I was just leaning towards a system that uses OEM fobs to save money, since I will only use the remote start on trips to the snow. I figured installation of a full system would cost a ton more since a bunch more connections would have to be made, not to mention I would be paying for a full system.

I found the Valet 516T - its a module for about $60. It appears that all you have to do for install is:
1) tap into your lock motor wire
2) tap into the "alarm off" signal wire
3) tap into a couple Ignition wires
4) connect a transponder bypass (another $40).
5) connect to brake pedal sensor wire

If you wire it up to activate on "unlock" pulses, you would skip step 2 as the alarm would already be off.

You can then set it to "listen" for 2 or 3 lock(or unlock) pulses and then it turns on the transponder bypass and fires up the engine

Unless Im missing something, for about $100 in parts, I could add remote start if I made the ~6 wire connections.

Ill probably do this over winter break and let you guys know how it goes in January.

Adding the remote start to the newer 4runners is simple. The nice thing is the ignition wire are in a plug that has lots of room to work with. Hardest part is the door lock. That wire is deep in the kickpanel. Just make sure if you do it yourself you get a good bypass depending on your year.

The only downside to adding the 561T and a good keyless transponder bypass is that once remote start is activated, the key fobs wont work. This means 1) the truck cannot be locked/unlocked with keyfob 2) remote start cannot be killed, seeing as you cannot "re-trigger" the system with the key fob.

Neither of these things is that big a deal, but Im just curious if anyone has any ideas how to get around this. I suppose the simple answer is to just get a full alarm w/remote start, new key fobs and all. Just curious if theres another wire that could be defeated or have a pulse sent to or be jumped that would allow the factory key fob to work with the engine on. Thanks!

No, the 561T is just a remote start module that is triggered by either an auxilary port of an aftermarket system or by "listening" to three lock or unlock pulses from the OEM alarm.

The 561R is a complete system, new fobs and all. Surprisingly, the 561R can be had for $60 at circuit city, which is the lowest price I found for the 561T so thats a good deal. Also, circuit city charges $100 to install remote start, and $120-$160 for full systems with remote start. It may just be worth it to get the full 561R and pay the extra $20-$60 for the install.
