remote starter operation question

I bought a used '04 Ltd a couple years ago from a dealer, and periodically it has started itself. I first wrote it off to gremlins or a shoddy job of installing the rear DVD player that it has in it, but it's finally dawned on me (I know, I'm a little slow) that it has a remote starter. It's not that I didn't look for one, but I never could find it. It's only started itself 5 or 6 times since I've owned it.

Anyway, the car will start when I use the factory remote, but I can't figure out what exactly the correct order I'm supposed to push the buttons. Can anyone tell me how to make it work.

A couple other thing which will help explain my gremlin comment above. Twice it's started when I've used the key to raise/lower (I can't remember which) the rear window. Also, yesterday it started itself after I locked it, and since the rear wiper won't work.

On your factory keypad what buttons does it have / what icons are on them?

Havent seen the keypad, so i couldnt begin to list the millions of ways ive seen remote start buttons set up.


Your owners manual may mention it too...

I have, from top to bottom (with the keys at the bottom), lock, unlock, and rear window with the panic button on the back.

try holding down the lock and unlock buttons at the sametime.

Also is it the OEM keypad?

I would imagine that they would have made it alot simpler if its the factory system.

I think it's the 'Lock' button three times that starts the truck according to some of the posts I've read here with members who have remote starters that interface with the OEM remote/key fob.

2-3 times is generally the standard activation for aftermarket remote start w/ factory remote. Basically when you hit lock 3 times it sends 3 pulses to the activation wire of the remote start when then activates the remote start. It could also have a module on it to have it crank when it reaches a certain temperature, which could essentially be the "gremlin" you are referring to. There are also features that start the car every so often, and a malfunction in these could be causing it to crank randomly.

Not to hijack the thread - but I have a remote start kit (NOT OEM) from my old 5spd 4Runner that I was leary of installing due to 5spd perhaps being left in gear. I'd like to install it in 03 Rnr with factory RS3200 alarm. Do I just hide one of the OEM imobilizer keys somewhere in the car? And then can I use a key copy (w/out mobilizer chip) to start?.

you don't just hide it... you need an immobolizer bypass module made by DEI or you can essentially "hide it" by just taking your key and zip-tieing it around the key cylinder. That works to.
